Computer Help Plz!!

OK...so I got my computer back in April this year. It is a Celeron 700 processor with 256mb of RAM. It ran fine for a couple of weeks but has been slow ever since. I've grown to ignore how friggin slow it is and now its finally beginning to get on my nerves. I'm also running Windows ME on it.

I've tried everything I can think of besides reformatting the harddrive (something I would rather not have to resort to). I've defraged the Harddrive, run tests on it, and cleared up 2gigs of space on the hard drive.

I have another computer in my house (Pentium III 500, 128mb ram, windows 98). This runs at least three times faster than mine does.

So the question is, is there anything else I can do to possibly make the computer run ok. Could there possibly be things running in the background that would slow down the computer and if so, how would I locate them and delete them?

Thanks:)

Sounds like it could be a virus. Viruses can often replicate themselves in memory and run your system to the ground. Get Vet and run a virus check on your system (make sure you get it to scan ALL files) and keep it updated!!

Next run msconfig and disable some of the junk startup crap that gets installed by programs without your knowing.

If this still doesn't help let me know your systems specs (in detail) and i'll see what i can do to help

yeah do that first.... i almost guarantee that is what it is.... if you don't know how to do that, you go to your start menu, then go to "run", then type in "msconfig".... then when the box comes up, click the "startup items" tab, and uncheck everything..... then click "apply", then "ok", then when it asks you if you want to reboot, yes do it, then nothing will load up and you will have no hidden apps running in the background slowing you down.

THEN if that doesn't work, then i would do the virus checker.... you can get a bunch of freebie ones by doing a search at www.download.com or www.tucows.com

hope this helps, good luck.

OK, I've disabled all of the progams in the background and checked for viruses with Norton, there were none. Although the computer starts up quicker now, I still don't think I'm getting the speed that I should be. This could be just that Windows ME really sux so bad that it doesn't work good even with 256mb of ram but if not then I'd like to fix it. I'll PM you Tranzmit about this since you said you might be able to help.

Thanks,
