Just posted this in the other thread and then saw this so its a repost:
BTW, I voted 'I don't care about price' <-- its not bootleg though but a $5 student copy from days of graduation. I do shutter at the thought of paying for longhorn though...:nervous:
(the repost):
I think XP is reasonable - the problem is its all one big upfront sum.
When you think about it the OS is the lifeblood of your computer - you spend thousands of dollars on hardware so you can run it. Then you buy hundreds of dollars worth of software (games, apps, office tools, what not) throughotut the life of your computer so you can use it.
When you look at it XP Pro retails for what... $150-200? And XP Home goes for $100-150. Upfront this is a very big fee.
But the lifetime of these type of an MS OS is three years on average. So if you deduce it thats around $50 a year - at that price it doesn't look too bad.
The problem comes when a small user like myself has say 2 or 3 computers ... I really don't want to pay more then a $100 on an OS a year for my "household" - When I lived back home we had 5 computers (2 running linux) and we all basically shared the same MS OS though.
Basically I see it as a household/small office $150 a year an't too bad. If its just one user - $50 a year is a good deal too...
The main problem is I don't pay it "per year" (I wish say I could just subscribe to the OS at $50 a year for the next 10 years and be done with it) but I pay it upfront. And also whenever I get a new system I have to pay the same fee again --- which really is odd to mean and difficult to rationalize - its like being forced to pay for a newspaper subscription twice because your brother/wife/sister wants to read it and not just you (the subscription holder).:eyespop: |

| 150$ is a joke, its nothing for one of the most complex software ever written. |

well considering their costs, and 90% market price they really could lower the price quite a lot...
btw, i miss the alternative "I rather download linux for free" |

Yea - always suprised me how Office though is much more (ridicilously) expensive even though it takes a lot less manpower to program and maintain.
Obviously its a marketing stategy to price XP at the point they are offering it... its much more expansive and complex then little'ol Office, thats for certain. |

costs? i remember microsoft plunked billions in the developpement of windows 2000 ( basis for xp ). BILLIONS!
look, every computer needs a harddrive, and you'll pay what, 150$ for it or so?
a couple of ram modules? 200$?
but a 40 millions line of code is only 150$, plus they have to cope with piracy, and other mickey mouse OSs like linux. |

the thing is that OFFICE is the cash cow of microsoft, way more than their OSs. they sell alot of it (not as many as xp) and it cost less to produce.
XP is the foundation, office is the tool you need to do real work. |

I know, but ever thought about the BILLIONS they got in revenues from selling stuff? It greatly exceeds their developing costs thats for sure! |

So? You want them to become less efficient at writing software so they can justify their software prices to you:conf: ?
If their prices for XP saw was 20 bil. and not 10 bil. because they chose to give their employees say half the year off, would that make it better?:conf:
Silly argument... |

What are you talking about? Linux is waaay better and much more stable (it's just not very user friendly to people who don't know much about computers). Windows is a pretty crapy OS, especially considering how much time and money went into it. What windows has going for it though is it's user friendly interface and load of aps and games. So, if you're the average joe, then, yeah, Windows is much better suited for you. Linux is a way better development enviornment any day. |
