thoughts on christopher lawrence?

i recently got his "unhooked sessions" and have been comparing it to his earlier "united states of trance" and am generally still undecided about how i feel about his work. on the one hand, i like his trancey, pulsating, proggy-crossed-with-pseudo-industrial/psy tracks, his dark landscapes of icy peaks and shadowy valleys, as well as the progressive underbelly of each album...but i'm starting to get the feeling that not much has really progressed, so to speak, from one CD to the next. i like it, i just wish it would go somewhere else. his addictively eery landscapes are starting to feel sparsely nuanced and frankly a bit barren.
anyway, i'm struggling to understand a dj i've otherwise completely enjoyed. can anyone shed some light on what you think he's doing? or tell me what to listen for? i'm not really interested in how he's ranked and rated--i just want to try to figure what he's all about musically :) |

Unhooked is a compilation the tracks that Christopher produced for Hook Recordings in the late 90's. It a retrospective of his singles, so no surprise that it may sound dated and the sound is similar throughout the album.
As for comparing Unhooked to United States of Trance, they came out around the same time - late 90's, which would account for it.
To get a feel for his current live sound, you'd have to dig up his recent Essential Mix or some of the other live mixes that are floating around. I recall hearing one from Malaysia earlier this year that was slammin. You can always go see him live, he usually rocks it.
IMO, he's a very talented DJ and producer, but it's not always easy to track down his live sets and he doesn't seem all that interested in putting out mix comps these days, mainly artist albums. |

tnx, good advice all around. i saw him live in San Francisco a few years back and thought his set was great. guess that's what's kept me interested. |

| He was here in Toronto the other day... I heard he was alright... by alright I mean.. pretty good. But, IMO... I still prefer George Acosta as far as Trance dj's go in America. |
