I thought this post by someone was pretty cool...

I like this definition:

Quote:
# There are many different genres of music out there...from alternative to rap to classical to Ambient. Most of them are represented on Listology, with at least a few lists. However, one genre that I noticed was horribly left out, was trance. Not one list (as I write this that is). There is a bit on the electronic lists, and the "techno" lists (which have absolutely no actual techno on them - mostly big beat, breaks, ambient, and trance - which, even though they sound nothing like techno, often get called techno [trust me - techno is only good if DJed extremely skillfully - mostly it's a 5 second anything looped endlessly, usually just beats] )

# Definition of trance (for those who don't know): An extremely popular club/dance genre (especially in Europe, where it gets constant radioplay), that is built around the intense buildups and breakdowns, as well as emotional melodies. The melodies are between 10 and 60 seconds long (usually it hovers around 17) - which is longer than any melodies in pop and rap - these usually have 4-9 second tunes. Also, there are usually 2-4 melodies that alternate and combine, and a 3-4 layer bassline. Real instruments are very often included (like guitars, drums, trumpets, etc.), and female vocals are an extremely popular addition (either singing through much of the song, or occasionally appearing. Sometimes it's simply used as a build-up layer). It has little similarity to techno (so don't even bother saying it), which is usually a 5 second sound looped into a beat. No builds and very few changes. (you might recognize trance from the radio - the songs Alice Deejay - Better Off Alone, Darude - Sandstorm are two examples of songs that got played on North American radio. The better stuff never gets airplay over here, although clubs love the stuff. Techno has never had radioplay. There hasn't yet to be a North American techno hit. (Although there are VERY occasional ones in Europe, and usually it's tech-trance or tech-house- a middle ground between techno and either trance or house). It's really a combination of classical, dance, progressive, house and techno. It takes it's beat and power from techno, the melodic nature and a bit of the vocals from classical, and the... listenability...from dance (as well as a small amount of everything). The buildups and kind of energy, the way they are in the genre today, were invented by the pioneers of trance, and are completely original to the genre. .... etc etc...

I find it hard to take seriously someone who describes techno as a "5 second sound looped into a beat".

Although, haplessly that is the case with a good deal of contemporary techno. :/

Yet I'd still prefer a "5 second sound looped into a [techno] beat" to most trance nowadays.

I don't think so Tim.

Well besides the technical aspects- this definition of Trance is pretty bang on I think:

“Trance is warm, emotional, driving music which can be anything from deep tribal to hard techno and everything in between. Trance music gets you in a state of trance—it takes you on a journey.” -Armin Van Buuren-
