*warning* boring thread not so suited to COR.
when a clutch burns out on you, do you always have symptoms?
i have a 98 chevy s10.... 68k
i was having no symptoms whatsoever, and i was cruising on the interstate going 75 or whatever and all of a sudden it slipped out of gear, i smelled something burning and i pulled over. i couldn't put it back into gear.
my mechanic friend looked at it and he said it may have been a bad shiftfork or throwout bearing. the dealer looked at it, and said my clutch was burned out, and i would need $750 + to put a new one in.
i got the impression in the past that when a clutch is going out, you can definately notice it in the weeks/days before it happens.
i have a feeling that the dealership is trying to screw me over, and i think they are shady in the first place.
any gearheads out there who can help me out? |

official dealerships always change all the things together... if you have an auto transmission (which is not clear from what you wrote), there'll be a clutch pack, and they'll replace the whole thing, not just the faulty disc or whatever parts.
go to some local mechanic - a guy who works for himself - he'll replace the stuff that needs to be replaced, with leaving the working parts in place. and he'll charge 3 times less. you just have to find someone you can trust not to make things worse.
also, a 5-year clutch life is ok for manual transmissions, but AT clutches should work much longer.

i have a manual transmission.
the problem is, that i live in madison and the dealership that i bought the truck at is in milwaukee.
i bought the POS in October, and it broke down in Feb, and they put a used transmission in under warranty, but they charged me for towing it to milwaukee. the warranty ended in March, and it broke down again now in June, and i thought it was due to a ty installation of the transmission, so they towed it to milwaukee again, and i'll be charged for that too.
.

well, for one thing, tell all your friends how ty your s10 and this dealer in particular is, and not to ever buy this make/model/from this dealer. write your story to local milwaukee newspapers, tv stations, etc, maybe some poor news-starved jounalist intern will write a sketch or request an interview. try to go to the court with the complaint. cause, i mean, a couple thousand dollars PLUS a headache is something that should be their concern, not yours, esp. when you buy a new car on warranty.
i would say, you were atrociously ed with on a moral level.
the good news is mechanical transmissions are much easier/cheaper to repair, so you can tell them to shove those $750 up their asses - you can replace the whole transmission for $750 with a good local mechanic. just find one who'll do it. |
