Overclocking

Ok I built my first system from scratch and I'm really happy with it. One thing I've been wondering about is overclocking. Does it really make your pc that much faster? What is the purpose of ram heat spreaders? Obviously they must act as a heat sink but are they only for overclocking? BTW, I have AMD64 3000 939pin on Asus deluxe with 1gb of kingston value ram.

i don't know advanced information about custom building, but i will tell you that if you are going to overclock your computer, then i suggest a really good cooling agent inside ..

stupid suggestion from me ...

actually, leopold is correct. the FIRST thing you should ponder about when it comes to OC (not the TV show) is proper cooling. Your system seems solid enough. Why risk an improper OC on such a machine that is pretty solid for its time?

unless you want to OC your proccesser to 18 ghz, cooled by liquid nitrogen. google it

it depends how much you need the extra bit you'd get, bearing in mind the strain put on cpu & other components. Personally I wouldn't bother with it if it's a good new machine in the first place, but there'll easily be people who would

it depends on how much you overclock. an increase of 10-20mhz wont really be felt, but if you can get it up 2 or 300 hundred, you can usually feel a difference. i would reccommend reading up on it HEAVILY before attempting it, though. i have my xp3000+ oc'd to 3400+ speeds, so i basically saved myself the purchase of an upgrade.

I'll do some research and post on a overclocker board. I'm thinking i dont need any extra speed right now so I'm leaning towards leaving it stock for the mean time. thx everyone

Trust me, your A64 is fine at stock, I have a AMD Mobile 2500+ which I have overclocked to 3200+ speeds, and yours at stock is still about a good 30% faster than mine.

It's not like you are some heavy video-encoder or somesuch are you?

I do video editing, so rendering and encoding are bitch no matter how fast ur system is. right now i use a g5 to edit but its not mine so I'm transitioning to my pc. If I had the money I would have gone with the g5 (love the simplicity of the mac software and os), but I couldn't afford $2,000 price tag for a powermac.

dont do it! i have baaaad experienced with overclocking! i tried to be safe and careful over time, it destroyed my vid card, which had a seemingly huge sink on the graphics card, but to no avail!

and now i can play no games with my once badass machine

if u understand the maths behind overclocking, and understand overclocking in depth it is not that hard, and not that dangerious, and can yield very good results.

this site here is very detailed, the members know their stuff and it has detailed guides from everything from the processor to the power supply - and how critial each part is. id suggest spending time readng up on everything. even something like not having the correct ampage on ur 12v+ rail on ur power supply will hault ur overclock.
