Do i need monitors?

Just wondering i've attached a picture with the setup in my garage.

Dimensions of the place are about 20ft X 12ft

So nothing too big, the speakers there at the moment are only a set of Creative S750's. 7 satellites getting 70rms each, and a sub getting 210rms.

So my questions is, with my decks on the side there will i be at a disadvantage having no speakers facing me directly? OR should i be grand as i'm only in a small space?

Otherwise i'm thinking of mounting some wall brackets to hold a set of speakers facing me. And i'll power them from a seperate amp :)

Cheers

cant hurt to have more speakers :D

dont think it would with the accustics too bad either... but i may be wrong, im not a sound enginer

I would definitly want some speakers in front (or next to) the decks and mixer.

u'll want at least 1 speaker facing u. if u dont have any, you'll only hear the sound bouncing off the walls which will sound like ur trainwrecking even when ur not.

just curious... how are those Creative speakers?
from the drawing your place looks pretty chill... but like everyone said, at least a speaker for the dj would be nice so you're not going off the sounds bouncing off the walls.

YES!

it will sound like ass where you are. then again, i am the type that wants all the speakers pointed at me, everyone else, i DJ cuz i love the music, i wanna hear it loud and clear!

Cheers for the replies lads :)

Damn though .... more money lol, dunno which speakers to get now either! but i'll have a search on which monitors to get. Don't want to spend too much either as i've just bought a load of stuff for having a bit of fun doing some woodwork.

The 'garage', quite famous at this stage with my friends and their friends etc etc, it's just a chill out pad which is seperate from my house. A two story garage which has two cars down stairs and upstairs is just a normal room. The whole building is made to living standards incase we ever want to convert it.

There's a (rolling) table between all the couches/sofas as well.

The creative speakers, well to be honest i was very skeptical of them, i like my music as well. And wanted something to compliment my music and not something that would just distort it at any reasonable volume.. The specs looked good on paper and after a month of reading reviews i went for them. Hooked them up and :D I loved them!

Having said that i bought the decoder from creative as well. As this allows me to hook up my Tv's sound, my ipod, my sister mp3 player. A playstation 2 (i don't have one) an Xbox (i don't have one lol) And my decks, and another 2 or 3 devices. All you have to do the is change the channel and it plays. No fiddling with wired any more.

There are a few settings on the decoder as well which send the music through the speakers a little differently. Cinema and Music being the most used settings i find. Most of the music comes from the front three speakers and then you'll get the odd ambient high hat or something similar coming out of the rear satellites. However don't be fooled as you never get a full signal (or full volume) out of the back 4 speakers. The front 3 do all the work. It's a different story with DVD's, the Grudge springs to mind though.. scares the sh!t out of you when the sounds come from behind you.

Anyway i've gone on a bit of a tangent here :), i'll have to look into some monitors so. They don't have to be too powerful but i'm going to mount them on the walls (slanted walls :()

I thought i would need them as i knew it would be hard keeping track of what was going on if i didn't have speakers in front of me, or atleast closer to me. Didn't know if i could use my headphones though to just wing it, so to say.

So yeh, again thanks for the replies. I'll have to see where i go from here so :)

one question, why is your table facing the wall (well you facing the wall when you mix)...i guess that's ok when you practice, but it's not that practical if you have a party in there? just out of curiosity (so don't take offence :))...thx

Anyone know any tricks to get good sound in that 12x20 room? Speaker positioning, and should some of the walls have soft materials like drapes to reduce echoes?

cryo
now im more curious on how it looks... pics pls
