Newcastle and Liverpool?
View this Thread in Original format

I am thinking of applying internationally next year for PhDs, and two universities that are promoted a lot over here are Liverpool and Newcastle.

So, I was wondering what these cities are like to live in, is there much nightlife etc, is it far from other major cities. (and what are the birds like?)
Also, anyone who goes to these unis, what are they like? Do they have uni owned accomodation?
Anything else I should know? Like whats public transport like (will I absolutely need a car) etc?

Cheerio, and thanks in advance!

first of all, u want to think about wot uni is best for ure course, might not me newcastle or liverpool, might be another uni. there are other cities with awesome nightlife aswell that might be worth considering.

so tell us the course, and we can tell u more;)

Knew I forgot something! I am doing Biotechnology atm, with a focus on cancer (especially skin).

Liverpool not so much, but Newcastle promote a fair bit in science based fields.
At least (going from dodgy memory) I think thats the two unis.

I am open to other suggestions though.

Cheers

i go to newcastle and one of my best mates goes to liverpool, both cities have good nightlife.

it really is down to your course

What about transport?
Do you need a car, or is public transport okay....

And I'm interested in more than nightlife, what are the cities like to live in, generally?

Newcastle have just amalgamated all the cancer departments into the northern institute for cancer research (NICR) and are thus very upcoming. In the science world i would say ncl has a better reputation than liverpool as well. Ncl just got first licence for stem cell research in UK.

Clubbing is probably pretty similar in both cities, and am sure wherever you went you would have an equally good time

The biggest monthly trance night here, called "SLIDE", just gets better n better, the likes of M.I.K.E, Adam Sheridan, The Judge, Above & Beyond, Signum, Jon O'Callaghan, Matt Hardwick and more have all graced the decks so far. Theres also plenty of "smaller" nights every month like Genr8, Kubik, and a few others the names I cant think of. Add to that the hundreds of bars and other clubs the nightlife's pretty great here. Birds r niiice

Not too sure about Liverpool's science/medical department but Im just about to leave 1 year into an engineering degree (too ing hard!), and "follow my heart" to study something musical :)

good luck

Liverpool has the better night life by far with clubs like circus, chibuku, etc. But I have no idea what university would be more suited for your course though. Obviously this is the most important thing at the end of the day.

i wouldn't say liverpool has a better nightlife at all, it's good, don't get me wrong, it's just different.

newcastle for trance has Promise (all the big names ferry, jules, mike, sheridan, hardwick, haliwell, scot project) and Vuzz and Twisted Logic are the smaller trance nights (with like kershaw, goldenscan, o'bir, fred baker, misja helsloot, ronski speed)

there is also other nights like shindig (prog/house with digweed, sasha, zab, etc. on) and wax:on which is an electro night.

there's also smile/hed kandi which is the funky stuff with smile being the student night on a monday.

there's loads of other stuff on at the quayside, unis and the gate, just stay clear of the bigg market lol. there is a new club just being built next to the centre of life too
