Liberals are in bed with seperatists to pass the budget!

Funny how they accuse the conservatives of being in bed with the Bloc. Not only are the Liberals in kahoots with them, but they just pulled yet another undemocratic move to shove this through by tricking almost half of the house of parliament into thinking there was no vote taking place.

These Liberals act like dictators... i want them out....

ALEXANDER PANETTA Fri Jun 24, 1:13 AM ET

OTTAWA (CP) - Paul Martin's Commons corps dusted off a rarely used procedural tactic just before midnight to bamboozle furious Conservatives and pass contentious Liberal-NDP budget amendments Thursday.

The immediate result was the stifling of any threat of a summer election and an acceleration of the vote on same-sex marriage. That vote could occur as early as Monday. The Conservatives could only sputter and fume after their unofficial partners in the Bloc Quebecois deserted them to join the Liberals and the NDP to cut off debate on the budget.

They compared their Liberal, NDP and Bloc opponents to crooks, Satan and Hollywood homicidal maniac Hannibal Lecter.

By contrast NDP Leader Jack Layton stood triumphant in the Commons while his jubilant troops tossed shredded paper and applauded one of the biggest coups in their party's history: approval of their $4.6 billion budget deal with the government.

"There's been so much name-calling and finger-pointing here that the key for us was just to get something done," he said of his deal.

"We've been months here without much to show for it and finally we have a positive budget."

The NDP budget deal, struck this spring when the Liberals desperately needed allies in Parliament, erased corporate tax cuts and replaced them with $4.6 billion for housing, the environment, education and foreign aid.

The realization of what had occurred only dawned on the Tories as they gazed around the shuttle buses that normally ferry MPs off Parliament Hill and realized there wasn't a Liberal in sight.

Every available Liberal MP was cloistered in the Commons lobby waiting to spring into a vote to cut off debate. The Liberals, the Bloc and New Democrats made extraordinary use of a rule allowing for cutting off debate on the budget if they agreed the Conservatives were being obstructionist.

Conservative Leader Stephen Harper poured scorn on the alliance.

"When push comes to shove the Liberals will make any deal with anybody," Harper said after he was forced to rush back for a midnight vote. "And it doesn't matter whether it's with the socialists or with the separatists or any bunch of crooks they can find."

Though the Bloc stood with the Tories in the midnight budget ballotting, the Liberals still mustered five more votes than the Tory-Bloc alignment. Several Conservative MPs were absent.

The Liberals were taking a monumental gamble. A loss on the vote would force the prime minister to dissolve Parliament and call a summer election.

But Liberal strategists were confident they had caught the Conservatives unawares and decided to risk their government for a decisive victory.

"I hope they can count," Liberal MP Shawn Murphy said of Liberal strategists as MPs milled around before the vote.

Polls have suggested for almost two months now that an election would see the Liberals returned with a minority mandate. Privately, several Conservative MPs were hoping for an "honourable loss" on the budget vote to avoid an election that could have cost them seats, particularly in their Ontario beachead.

The Tories, who had boldly predicted they could topple the Liberal government on the budget vote, were suddenly complaining they had members missing.

A few Conservatives were missing from their seats in an earlier vote Thursday evening. More could been seen racing back up Parliament Hill when news broke of the impending budget showdown.

They reacted with unfiltered rage.

Conservative deputy leader Peter MacKay described his foes as a menage a trois between separatists, socialists and power-hungry Liberals.

Liberals claims of making the minority Parliament work was "all just one big, fat stinking lie" and then went further, comparing the Liberals to one of Hollywood's most heinous homicidal cannibals.

"We have to start thinking that Hannibal Lecter is running the government and they'll do anything they have to do to win."

Tory MP John Reynolds was ranting about the Liberals jumping "in bed with the devil" - the Bloc Quebecois.

Liberals could barely contain their glee in response.

"Its not surprising that Hannibal Lecter should spring to mind for Mr. MacKay given the growing number of Conservatives who believe the party should soon eat its own leader," said Scott Reid, the prime minister's spokesman.

The article failed to mention the WRITTEN agreement between the Lieberals and the Bloc that was signed this week.

The government is now an alliance of socialists, separatists, special interest groups and the mafia, all under the nominal control of Herr Martin and the Lieberal Party machine.

Who among us will have the courage to stand up against them?

After Adolf Hitler was appointed Reichskanzler on January 30, 1933 the process of Gleichschaltung commenced with the Reichstag Fire Decree and the Enabling Act (Ermächtigungsgesetz), in which the Reichstag formally dispensed of its legislative powers. From then on it only functioned as a body of acclamation for the actions of the dictatorship.

quote:
The law therefore formally required a two-thirds majority in the Reichstag. Hitler had taken care of that though: by the powers provided of the Reichstag Fire Decree, most of the Communist Party deputies were already jailed, and those mandates were declared "dormant" through a change of the Reichstag rules of procedure. The remaining members of parliament were intimidated by the SA surrounding the parliament hall. In the end, only the Social Democrats voted against the bill.

"This is how liberty dies. With thunderous applause."

Time to vote these guys out.. they abuse power so much that it hardly makes news anymore.

good.

The criticism are pathetic...so when the Bloc and/or NDP sides with the Conservatives against the "corrupt" Liberals, it's ok...but when the Liberals employ either/both of their assistance, they're "in bed with the Seperatists and Socialists"? Nice double standard, lol.

The Conservatives lost their precious confidence vote earlier this spring...CLAIMED that bringing down the gov't was no longer the agenda...yet Conservative MPs were still talking about attempting to do so. I'm sick of this bickering...DO SOME ING WORK INSTEAD OF CONTINOUSLY TRYING TO TOPPLE THE GOV'T. *** Especially when that's NOT WHAT THE PUBLIC WANTS ***

(and if anyone says the public is stupid and the Conservatives know better, then you're advocating for the very dictatorship you're claiming Martin to head!)

btw, polls indicate the Liberals are back to PRE- AD SCANDAL POPULARITY LEVELS. The Conservative leadership is a joke...I've said before that they need rework their strategy. Say what you want about the Liberals, they are effective politicians. The Conservative leadership is clearly incompetent...

i only posted that title because its the same that a Liberal would have used if the Bloc had voted with the Conservatives to bring down the government. So when the Liberals use Bloc support it's ok but when the conservatives do it there is a conspiracy with seperatists?

I think thats the double standard... Although i do agree that its time for a leadership change.

Sounds kinky...

I don't think the double standard is ok either...regardless of which side it comes from. Under a minority gov't, this is likely going to happen all the time.

You want to topple the gov't due to corruption...fine...at least that could be considered a noble motive (if it IS the motive). Seeking to continuously topple them over their budget...the budget that the sitting gov't is exepcted to table and push through...that is not acceptable, IMHO.

Oppose it...sure...but if the other parties support it...even because 4.5 billion in concessions are made...SO WHAT? The Liberals have their budget, the Bloc supports it, the NDP got the extra spending they wanted it to contain. The criticism can't be "the Liberals bought their support" as if that's negative...negotiation is how a minority gov't functions in the first place!

All of this whining by the Conservatives is really just them crying at their inability to gain ground...I think it's time they look inward instead of blaming the other parties, the media, etc. You can't change the other parties, the media, etc...so change your leadership because it's failing your party...*badly*.
Jayx1
well the conservatives have every right to oppose a budget that they dont agree with. Thats how demorcracy is supposed to work. Democracy is not tricking the opposition into leaving the commons when the vote is about to occur.

MarkT
opposing a budget should not equal attempting to topple a gov't...over and over and over again...and in direct contrast to the wishes of the public.

That's stalling the gov't from getting anything done...and quite possibly a major reason why Canadians' support for the Conservative party is falling.
