Broadband phonecalls????

I've heard that, with the right software, it's possible to have a phone conversation via broadband. Not with msn audio, but you actually get to dial the number and call a landline, then have the conversation using a headset. Google threw up quite a few hits, but I need some more basic info. Please (with cheese!) would somebody tell me...

1. Is there any hardware I need?
2. What software/packages do I need to sign up for?
3.Do you need more than a basic knowledge of computer to set it up?

i'm not sure about other landlines, but the best online one is Skype/Skope (i cant remember the full name atm) which allows u to have audio calls online in good quality. Maybe it does more but i've not used it, I just know a few ppl who know their have asked me to get it, so it should be good.

yup i use it daily because i'm in new york and my cell phone is roaming out here, so I get crazy charges. But I downloaded SkypeOut and bought some credits for 10 euros (about 13 bucks) ... that gets you 10 euros of credits and phone calls to US numbers are only 1.7 euro CENTS a minute! so it's a great bargain if you have broadband ... it's JUST like real phones ... i get almost no lag and the sound is perfect (receiving and outgoing).

i use skype, too b/c my family and friends are in the states and it is only 2 cents a minute to call landline phones anywhere.

i only call landline phones if the person cant be reached thru a computer or they dont have one. if they have a computer then it is free, b/c all they need is a headset!

i heard there is better programs out there, but i dont about know them.

i have one problem with skype. i live in a house with 3 other people on a ADSL connection and if they are doing downloads or other theings that require a lot of bandwidth then it interferes and you sound mumbled. we tried fixingg it and giving skype first priority but it doesnt work. i wind up just pulling that persons plug out of the modem.

you just need a headset.

with newer versions of skype, you can actually get a phone number assigned to you and have people call it and it rings your PC. They are also making new mobile phones Skype Capable so if your in an area with wifi, it will connect to that and use VoIP instead of using your minutes on your phone.
