Curious. Your thoughts on the difference between the "LA Scene" and "SF Scene"

Wasn't this discussed on the Spundae board last month Dave ? :)
As I said back then, its an issue of eras.
Having lived in both places (LA now, and SF during the Dot Com era), I would have to say that SF has a more open and rebellious attitude towards different styles of music, and so it WAS definitely a better place back 5 years ago during the Nikita/Release/Spundae era at 1015. Unfortunately, House Music is also big up there, and that is SF's achillies heal today because I don't think house is particularly relevant anymore these days.
In the end they're probably neck and neck with SF being more house centric and LA more hip hop etc. Trance wise they are virtually the same. I have had some of the most earthshattering moments of my life at 1015 and Ruby over the years, particularly Ruby when it first opened. |

When I say house I mean the older style minimailst house that SF is known for, not Prog.
The main reason is that House doesn't really take advantage of the advances in music production technology that have taken place over the past decade or so, whereas Trance (for example) HAS. Infact, Trance is really setting the pace as it relates to products like Logic, Cubase, DP, as well as most softsynths, DSP based processeor technology and the like. A lot of these products and technologies are evoloving because of the insatiable demand that trance producers are putting on the vendors to perpetually revise and improve them. Automation is probably the biggest element of them all.
You can still make House Music on very basic technology from 15 years ago, whereas Trance really does utilyze the new stuff - and thats why one is soaring upwards, and the other is being left behind. This is not a critique on House, because I've played a lot of it over the years, but it just isn't evolving at the rate that Trance is these days. HTH. :) |

that may be true on the technology side of things - however, i think that a lot of ppl would agree with me that some of the most interesting advances are coming out of the minimal techno genre (specifically berlin) with hawtin clearly being on the cutting edge when it comes to pushing the technology of the edm scene.
i guess i have noticed in the last year or so a lot of trance producers distancing themselves from trance and producing more house/tech-house/electro tracks (i.e. ben lost, ozgar can, haak etc.) b/c they don't feel that trance is going anywhere and that the sounds of minimal/tech-house/electro are clearly where the younger dj's (i.e. prydz, fanciulli) are taking their music. |

I don't necessarily disagree with any of this. There are a lot of interesting things happening in various genres of electronic music - although House Music is clearly being left in the dust because it is so unchallenging to make, and the technology out there today supports making music that is alot richer and more complex. Again, I'm not trying to slight House Music, but it has seen its finer days. |
