New update. It sounds better this time ;) |

It really depends what you're going for here Thayne.
Here are a few random thoughts that might shed some light on things.
1. The beat (mainly the kick and snare) are quite good imo, infact they remind of alot of Ricky's (Digital Blonde) beats. Big kicks, big snares, and loads of reverb. Not a bad thing, but just remember that by using fatter kicks and snares, you essentially limit your being able to use a lot of other synth sounds since the kick/snare/bass will eat up most of the aural spectrum.
2. The main areas where you could improve things are the melody - It just doesn't seem to lead us anywhere. Its mildly intriguing when it first comes in, but we are left wanting it to filter. oscillate or change notes to create some direction. As it stands, it tends to stagnate, which is boggin the track down. I'm talking about the string/synth melody here. Play with it a bit, and try to make things slightly more melodic. Don't be afraid to change the bassline so that it switches notes from time to time. All of this will create a more wide open sound imo.
3. Try to compare your track to a track that you like. I'm working on something at the moment, and since I LOVE Mike Koglin's stuff, I usually "A/B" my track in Logic to whatever - this week its Circuits by Mike Koglin. You would be surprised how much comparing something will inspire you to make improvements.
Finally, decide where you're going with the track. Is it an early set piece, or something more peak hour. A foundation or an anthem ?
Food for thought. HTH

Thanks Raoul. The string/synth thing you're talking about is what sets up the main lead, the main lead, or both? Right now, I really like it *except* for the fact that it seems a bit repetitive. It's missing *something*. Once it gets that it should be fine. What I think I'll do is add a heavily distorted synch saw that will serve as a countermelody and some flanged fx. It will get there soon. It would have been there by now if it werent' for the fact that my cpu gets completely chewed up in the process of doing this :P. |

| I mean both of them. Just play with it. There really are no rules. Just make it work. :) |

Yeah, the good part is that alot of this is fixable or the solution just requires a lot of grunt time with tweaking sounds. Phynn said that I need to take the reverb out of the kick. I've been trying to, but I htink I need to go back and edit the original sample first. That may take some time to get right as I like the kick sound pretty much as it is *if* it weren't muddy. I don't think there's anything fundamentally flawed about it. It just needs more sounds. I'll get to it tonight. |

| Well he might have a point, but thats just a matter of preference, and it will depend on what you want out of the drums. I can tell you that JOOF sometimes spends a few days on the kick/snare/look/bassline relationship alone so don't hesitate to mute all the other sounds and focus on the drums and bass. Get all the effects right, compress it and all that - and then revisit the sounds that are on top of the basic beat & bass. |

Yeah, if I could take out the reverb I would be pretty happy with the kick. I spent about two days on the bassline until I finally got it to where I wanted it, and getting the lead sound right was a chore and a half. I'll see what I can do tonight. |

The kick should be fixed now.
I added another fx. It sounds so much more full now. Yummy! |

Thanks. I think I'm getting a bit carried away with the filtered fx sound, so a lot of those are placeholders for something else I'm going to do. I also realized I could have a full chord progression on the lead if I added some highs which I think would make it fill out a bit. I'll have it done by the time I get back from Japan ;) |

I know exactly what you're talking about. To some it's fine, to others it's a bit awkward. I still think it's a tiny bit awkward, though I think I know what to do now.
PS - put some feedback in the producer's section
PSS - note to self: try to make a simpler track next time :p |
