"the right thing to do", IMHO.

it's unfortunate that the path taken wasn't a smooth one...but kudos for Martin for pushing it through. Trudeau would be proud :D (flame suit on, lol).

Once the bulk of our society realizes that this doesn't impact their daily lives in any significant way (if at all), I don't think it will even be an issue.

IMO it should have been a national referendum, but that's just me. It just seems to be too big of a question that does effect basic roots of a lot of Canadian's moral view.

I also don't have faith in our elected officials so that's a lot of bias there.:toothless

I strongly disagree...rights ought not be subject to the personal opinions of the majority...and ESPECIALLY the morality of the majority.

eg. if 3% of the population is Native Canadian...or Muslim...or physically disabled...or (insert minority here)...should there really be a national referendum on something to do with their *rights*? What if 75% of the country votes "no" to something for their own selfish reasons?

Many people opposed gay marriage for religious reasons...not simply to protect religious institutions from having to recognize or perform gay weddings, but because they actually oppose homosexuality on moral grounds. NEVER should that morality be pushed upon those who don't share that religious affiliation. State and church ought to remain very separate, IMHO.

In effect then, you're happy with rights being decided by 303 people? As much as we like to think that our MPs represent our interest, in the end, we know that they are bound by partylines, personal stake/interest, etc.

Welcome to democracy. I think Milne said something about 'tyranny of the minority too. The question is whether there can be a balance between the will of the majority and the rights of the minority. I don't believe Canada has the ability and the will to find that fine balance.

And I agree with you, except that the voters are sometimes influenced by religious reasons (whether for or against) and that reflects in the govt. (for example, some may think foreign aid should be increased because doing charitable works is good for their soul, while others may think it's just a nice thing to do, etc.

“Rights ought not be subject to the personal opinions of the majority?”

Should a minority dictate the laws of a nation?

“What if 75% of the country votes "no" to something for their own selfish reasons?”

Do the minorities not have their own selfish reasons?

Weddings are religious, as they came from religion and not law.

Marriage is religious sacrament, not a political right, thats what common law unions are for.

Weather or not the whole country votes or just the people whom have been elected into parliament I am glad this happened. I understand that there are religious reasons that make people against gay marriage, but life shouldn't be like that. If 2 people who love each other want to get married they should. It shouldn't matter of their sexual orientation or race or even religions. If you love someone with all your heart and want to spend the rest of your life with him or her...then no one should stand in your way

I agree that marriage shouldn't be a political right.

Why would gay people want to marry in a church anyways? It's almost as if they are in denial that GOD hates them.

Some denominations are more... open towards homosexuals.
