hmm... start with a websearch, which can be handy for getting an idea about your distant roots if you have a common last name, and good for finding more specific info if you have a unique last name. then you probably have to go back to public records and/or the archives (likely in the country of origin 'cause the old stuff is usually only on microfiche) to get the real particulars. what have you found out so far?

my dad was in ireland/england recently and found that we have to go back like 400 years before our ancestry is in ireland. they immigrated to england centuries ago. my other side is ukrainian with some other mix, incl. gypsy, so some of it is plain untracable.

but i mean what kind of websearch? should i try to find websites taht are designed for looking up names/family roots? my last name is really common (Cox), but some other names in my mom's family aren't THAT common (Bothner, Bouvier..)

i mean all names have to come from the same place right? i don't understand how all that works...

well If your the father of your grandmother came from germany, you'll have to start looking overthere. but then again, if he was a jew.. they'll prolly destroyed all the files about that family.
I don't know about websites, but in each village you can go and check who lived there.

unfortunately a lot of the geneology websites are pay sites, but i think there's a couple out there with some info. if your name is common, which you mentioned it is, then someone may already have done some work on it, and may already have some info on the web.

as for the jewish part from germany, beacuse a lot of it has been destroyed, a lot of jewish organisations have worked to piece the info together. i'm quite sure if you go to a jewish organisation in your area they'd be happy to help point you in the right direction. many of my friends are jewish and have great knowledge of their roots. it's actually fascinating.

(as an aside, you should check out israel for free - you've got jewish heritage so you should have no prob going probably. look it up, it's pretty interesting.)

if you want too, PM me. i might be able to help you a bit with your search... (i'm a media researcher by trade...)

*edit* that's wicked about the native-american background... it's a fascinating history. and yeh, i think if you're a certain percentage native-american, you do qualify for a cut. you'd have to look into it.

yea that would explain my drug use...:stongue:

no but seriously, that IS pretty cool...my dad said she lived on a reservation and did pottery and all that stuff. lol since my dad's family is mostly military/redneck (like i described earlier) my great grandpa was probably a "cowboy" type who fell in love with a pretty native american girl, like a cute little poccahontus(sp?) story. haha

hey i just found this online...paragraphs 4 & 5...

you know that really depends on your ancestry. my mom like sends away for birth certificates of family members and does the whole online thing (like someone said mostly pay sites)...i think she's gotten back to about the early 1800's, but then you get to where they came over from ireland and you lose documentation...

my mom did one. i don't think its that hard to start. do a line of coke and start calling relatives. start with your immediate family and work you way back in time.
