Cell Phone Plans

I'm thinking of getting a cell phone and join the rest of you annoying ppl who chat everywhere. I don't talk much but I need something where ppl can contact me only for important stuff when I'm not at home so I'm thinking of either a basic $30/300min/month plan or a prepaid. T-moible seems to have the best prices. Just curious what cell plan you're on.

I'm a cheap bastard. I've been saving myself $300-400 per year, using a land line thats crystal clear, doesn't drop my calls, and I don't have to worry about my minutes. Weird huh?

No no,I not criticising, just wondered wether I read right :)

T-Mobile is great if you love ty customer service and spotty coverage. I had them for a year and am now with verizon. My biggest complaint is taking being on a call while moving. On a train, car or even walking... if the cell towers arent close enough to pick up when you leave the other towers range... "Call Ended" and then within a second, you will be shown you have full service...

Its but Im critical with cell coverage. I tried many for the 16 to 30 day trial you are allowed. Being in and around a big city (ie chicago) here is what I found.

verizon>us cellular>t mobile>nextel>cingular

Dont forget that this is just my what ive seen and I am by no means a consumers advocate and you shouldnt take my thoughts as fact. Coverage and service varies from place to place.

After having cingular for almost a year, we are getting rid of them and switching back to sprint. Today they are supposed to be starting up nights starting at 6pm rather than 7pm (if you pay an extra $5) Ive had Nextel, T-Mobile and Sprint before, and the best by far was sprint. Nextel had good service, but was high priced for what you get.

To translate, I would recommend Sprint.

i guess people have different opinions with cell phones ..

i never had any problems with cingular .. then again, i live in a dirt poor city that lives on lint and pebbles .. :wtf:

but i guess cingular depends on where you live .. if you live in a high active cell phone city, then cingular may not work, because their cell phone towers can't manage all the traffic that coming in and out ..

but although cingular rapes you with additional charges, the only reason i still stick with cingular is rollover minutes ..

i think i have like 10000 rollover minutes, and i am on a 200 minute a month plan for 29.99 (old plan from years ago .. )

Towers play the biggest role in coverage. Try to get zoning information from your local HUD (Housing and Urban Development) office. If they give you guff, tell them youre a university student doing a project, and they may crack (note that after 9/11, such information is not willingly given, but Americans' attention span is fading all the time).

Every place has access to a different amount of towers so what is great in Chicago might not be great in Louisiana. I live in Ohio where Cingular and Sprint(a few years back) had the most towers. Ive never had a problem with Cingular that was reception related. Keeping in mind the recent acquisitions (such as Cingular buying AT&T mobile) play a role in expanding coverage.

Pre-paid, my co-worker has a Virgin plan hes always raving about, but hes a fat bastard.

I've got 450 min/month on Cingular. I had a big problem with billing a few months ago but got it all sorted out. The service has never been a problem and rollover minutes are a great thing.

Yeah you seem never to answer your phone either. Weird.

two plans I'm trying to choose from are:

t-moible pre-pay:
$40 phone + $100 yr/service with 1000 min. + additional min. $.10
Nice thing is its flexible and inexpensive to start you can use your minutes anyway you want and they rollover. Obviously you don't get as many minutes as a regular plan but a lot people don't end up using them.

or

t-moible 300m/$30 plan costs around $400 for the year. I like how you get free weekend minutes but don't like being locked into minutes per month.

BTW, how much will $30 month plan really cost? Someone told me there are additional charges like tax and access fees.

As far as coverage I'll ask around but I can ditch it before trial period ends.
