I know theres a few of these kind of threads kicking around at the moment..

But will one of the more technical minded people give some thoughts on these. Im looking at getting a laptop for production, and was kind of set on getting an apple until i saw these

The 4000 range is just out, so that could be an option, budget providing.

Thanks

david

Hereare the 4000's

Well I can *highly* recommend the Ferrari 3000 series laptops. I have a 3400 and use it as my main PC. It's damn powerful. If you get sick of making music on it you can play Halflife 2 / Doom 3 etc. on it! You will need to get some kind of USB / Firewire sound card for it in order to get into any serious music making though, but that's pretty much standard for all laptops.

The only downside of using the Ferrari as a music machine is the slow hard drive. Of course the hard drive speed only really matters if you're doing lots of audio file streaming. I remedied this by getting an external firewire drive, which works wonders.

I'm slightly annoyed that they've brought out the 4000 series already, I only bought mine about 6 months ago!!!

Don't ever buy anything with the letters "Acer" written, painted, or otherwise imprinted on it.
DaMaul
Well unless DigiNut can provide some constructive criticism, we can assume he's just talking out his arse. Both me & my mate are well pleased with the Ferrari notebooks.

If i was gonna spend the money on something thats gonna last i would go mac especially for music.

As for acer i never used on but i heard they can suck but like i said thats what i heard and i havent used em ever.
DigiNut
Um, how do you figure I'm going to provide "constructive" criticism on a mass-produced notebook? It's not like I'm talking to Acer's engineers here.

He asked about the Acer laptop, I gave an answer - the brand totally blows. They cut corners everywhere and their support is awful. That's why they're cheap (duh). Everything with Acer's name on it (or their spinoffs like AOpen) eventually causes major problems.

I work in IT. I've seen dozens of these cases. If you think I'm talking out of my ass, fine, you're entitled to your opinion, but you'll probably see things differently when that thing craps out on you.

I like Sony laptops. I have had a vaio for several years.

The most important thing on a modern laptop will be the amount of RAM. Get as much as you can, and before getting a faster CPU. Try to get an AMD based model if you can. Asus & IBM are good brands, too.

Here (price in pounds):

967.96 Sony - VGN-A115B - Vaio A115B Centrino 1.5Ghz 512MB 60GB 15 DVD+/-RW

Best offer: 895.52 IBM - TJ07QUK - TS R50PM 1.5GHz 256MB 60GB

Best offer: 1,010.21 Asus - W1743NUP

Also remember laptops are 'theif bait' so keep a close eye on it and maybe get a lock!

Thanks for the input everyone.

My concern over the Acer notebook is that it seems to be a bit of a gimmick, they don't seem especially reknowned for making brilliant computers, then teaming up with Ferrari to maybe raise their profile.
However, Ive not read a bad review on the ferrari noteboks and everybody seems to rate them, so maybe they have pulled it off with these?..

I had my mind set on an Apple for a long time and is still very much an option, but im unsure about the operating system etc, which im sure would be easy enough to pick up with time.

I'll check out the IBM, Asus.

Thanks
