Question From a Starting DJ

I'm ready to buy a pair of turntables and start practising to become a Trance DJ. I really don't have much money to spend. I was just wondering if anyone could help me with a couple of questions.

a) What brand should I buy? I can't afford anything really expensive, as I said, but it needs to be good enough that I can practise my mixing in a decent environment. You know, pitch control of 8+/- and all that jazz.

b) Exactly what equipment do I need to buy to get set up? Preferably, is there a starter package out there that would be good for me?

I'm a Canadian guy, so everything up here will be a little more expensive, in case you're from USA.

Thanks to anyone who can help! :)

greetz m8...

id say go w/ anything gemini if your starting out. make sure whatever you do buy is direct drive...you dont want to get stuck w/ a belt driven table. hehehe.

check out the gemini pt2100's. they are affordable, quality, all around good tables. if you can, find a package that includes those decks. it really doesnt matter what mixer you get, you really dont even need eq'ing right away (no matter what some of these f00's might say l8ter on in this thread :):)). be sure not to forget cartridges and headphones...those are essentials.

that system music warehouse is pretty expensive... and i'd never BUY anything at a store that rents out equipment... try spectacular sounds at st. clair/oakwood.. 416-656-8511

I only have one package to suggest: The Numark Phat Pak, about $499 U.S. A friend of mine bought this set-up as a beginner package and i have used it. I highly recommend it as a beginner set-up. The tables (tt-100) dont have that great of torque, but if you buy good slip mats that have scratch pads then they are fine. The mixer(DM-1001x) is your basic 2 channel mixer and is easy to use.
The package comes with speakers, a mic, cartridges, and all the cables to hook the equipment up. All you have to buy extra is some headphones.

Check the package out at www.123dj.com

If you are going to turn magically into PvD or AvB, buy your Technics SL-1200MK2 nice and early!! :p

If you are going to be passionate about trance and buy the best records you can afford, play reasonable sets and mix like only a DJ can, buy the **best** TTs you can afford. If you don't, you'll spend the rest of your DJing time trying to afford them :)
