My friend just gave me his M-Audio Audio Buddy preamp.

It looks like this:

My question is, how do I connect this to my computer? It is used for home recording / desktop recording.. however I have no clue how to connect it to my desktop. It has no USB connection or anything.

Its not a interface its a preamp..... Youd need a audio interface to connect it to your computer...

line out L/R into comp is the only way i know. preamps are handy for condenser mics. i don't think there is a way to usb it, as i think it is meant for handling audio stuff that runs through it.

How would you do that?

Like fr0st said, this is just a preamp, not an interface.

But if you already have an interface you would treat this like any normal input device. Line Out -> Interface Input. You would want to use a preamp on a mic to either add a gain stage (if it's not loud enough) or to colorize whatever it is you're mic'ing (Neve pre's ooh la la!!).

Gotcha.

I guess i gotta get M-Audio Fast Track. Its a USB Interface.

Hey. Basicly what a preamp does is it has potentiometers (seen on the front) opening and closing a gate to allow voltage through (think of it like a water gate on a dam where u can shut it off or open it all the way up). You then hook your mic or whatever else up to your preamp and then hook the outputs to an amplifier, perferrably one with no knobs or other controls. The reason for this is because with the controls so close to the amplification circuit, you get some extra noise, sometimes a LOT of extra noise that can destroy recordings. You can hook this straight to your computer if you want but I'd really recomend grabbing a rack amp and going that route.

Cheers,
Zac
