First, a little background. Fairly often, some of my employees visit Money Mart to have their cheques cashed. When they do, Money Mart calls me to verify their authenticity. It happens so often that i don't even bother checking the actual pay stub before verifying. After all, no one would ever try to cash a fake cheque with our name on it... right? Guess not. The phone just rang:
Her: This is Money Mart calling. Who am i speaking to?
Me: -censored-
Her: I have someone here trying to cash a cheque for a large amount. I wanted to verify it's authenticity. Are you the person i should be speaking to?
Me: Yes. What amount is it for?
Her: -censored-
Me: And the name?
Her: -censored-
Me: Sounds about right
Her: Are you sure? Because the signature doesn't match. And if you confirm it's authenticity, you're liable.
Me: Hold on, i'm calling the accountant on the other line.
Her: Alright, perfect.
Me (to accountant): I've got Money Mart on the line. Cheque made out to -censored- for -censored-
Him: Who?
Me: Exactly. And the signature doesn't match.
Him: I don't know who that is.
Me: Thought so. She says it looks fake too. Thanks.
Me (to Money Mart): Is he still there?
Her: Yes.
Me: Call the cops.
Her: I knew it! Hang on, i'll ask my manager.
Me: Hurry.
Her: We're calling 911. If they get here on time, they'll have him arrested. Please stay at this number.
Me: This is my cell, will do. |

Just as i was finishing up the last post, i got another call from Money Mart. The guy was now in hand cuffs. It looks like the cops got there in about 3 minutes, which is surprisingly fast considering that when i had a car accident, it took them 3 HOURS! I spoke to the cop, who took down my information and said that the guy is being taken to the station and charged with fraud. I'll be getting a call from a detective later today and will post with updates. I wonder who this guy is! |

LOL good call...sometimes I get really lazy and I don't bother (we have to re-verify commercial cheques verbally even when the signature matches!!!!) God bless the Anti-Money Laundering laws of Canada...
..and holy , diabolic; I hope that guy doesn't know you!!! |

Okay...as long as there's no physical violence...I'd be pretty damn scared about being the cause for someone to go to jail...I'd have to make for damn sure there's no chance of that person knowing it was me that was responsible! :nervous: |
