He does have a point though. The main melody in Carte Blanche sure sounds more like VDM's work at the time than Ferry's. But maybe they worked it out together, who knows. |

Here's my take:
Carte Blanche is mostly Epic with a bit of Anthem. The melody is 32-beat (Epic), but could fairly be considered two 16-beat Anthem lines that vary by a note or two. It's emotional, but quite anthemic as well. However the piano number is pretty much a dead giveaway; piano melodies were more or less copyrighted by Epic after 1996-97, and are almost entirely absent from Anthem.
Universal Nation is one of the best examples of Anthem trance out there. In fact, it's an excellent reference point from which to define the subgenre. It pumps along with an archetypical anthem line from start to finish. Not surprisingly, Strange World is another of the best Anthem Trance examples.
The Three 'n One remix of Cafe del Mar is mostly Anthem (16-beat lead, pure fanfare mood) but also has major Progressive Trance components. It lies in that grey area of 1996-97 when Anthem was growing out of Progressive Trance, and wasn't always easily classified. Standard Anthem Trance usually busts out with the main anthem line not too long after the intro, but the Three 'n One builds and builds for over half the track until it arrives at the lead. So the answer is both Anthem and Progressive Trance, but more Anthem.

Actually I find it pretty interesting to pick apart subgenres as best as possible. Perhaps in the same way that some people enjoy reading the phone book. :p
It's my own pathological pursuit, which I recognize others shouldn't necessarily follow or care about. I'm just trying to create order for myself, because that's something I do. |
