A message from the Promise (Cherry Beach) people

"We wanted to thank everyone who has made the Promise Cherry Beach Sunday Afternoon Soundsystem sort of a home outside their own home this year and helped us create a nice, familiar community.

Each week we see the best of people – helping others, feeding others, playing and spending time with others, and just generally feeling good with the music and the outdoors. It makes us happy and proud to be able to organize these events for the 4th year running. It makes us feel even better to hear that people need this fun and bring their good friends eagerly.

We would like to keep these days great and lately we have been worried that some people are treating Sundays more like a nightclub in the woods. Nightclubs are fun of course - the great joy of dancing and having an experience with friends, and that’s part of Cherry Beach too. But we dislike the alienation and selfishness that is part of nightclub experience. We have noticed that a small but vocal few have been trying to import these crappy elements to the Sunday afternoons and this is wrong. People have been bold in demanding certain expectations of the parties and even bothering djs who they don’t understand. We need to stop this.

Sunday afternoons don’t have a permit, an admission booth, security or t-shirt vendors. They are a bit fragile and are special as a result. They maintain the trust and respect that gets you enjoying frisbee with a total stranger, or that total stranger’s kid. Or sharing a picnic with a tired clubber who looks like they need it. Sundays at the beach in all likelihood shouldn’t be happening, but since we want them to, they do. There are no guarantees, except that we must do the right things to keep them going.

These afternoons belong to all of us, and it is for all of us to ensure that our neighbours are not only feeling their best, but they aren’t taking away the freedom for other, gentler folks to feel good - especially the children in our community.

We, David and Irving, are excited each year to host sundays at Cherry Beach, but it is a party that belongs to you, not us. We are there to enjoy and take some time off work just like you. If you see someone who may be drawing unwanted attention to the party by not being respectful, don’t assume we see it and will take care of it – please talk to them and let them know what is expected. If you see someone stumbling over someone else’s good time, let that person feel uncomfortable about being out of control. Tell them to come get a free bottle of water from us and go sit in the shade. Only you can keep this a responsible, self-contained event.

We want everyone to let loose and have fun. And we expect everyone to take responsibility for the event going smoothly. Lazy Sunday afternoons down at Cherry Beach should be as permanent a part of our city’s summers as it can be. We can all keep it nice together."

I have no idea what the story is behind this- dunno if it relates to the dead guy, or random Cherry Beach scum that u run across there on occasion, 'stupid clubbers' or what.

All I know is these parties are a blast, and should remain so. Come and enjoy these 'lazy Sunday' afternoons, and treat it with respect.

Most importantly, LEAVE NO TRACE (ie: take all your trash home with you, and help tidy up around you).

I def. concur :)

the garbage situation was definitely bad around where i was.
tatgirl
^ A solution to that is to always remember to bring a bag or trash bag, or throw some garbage in your duffle bag to toss later. This includes picking up all those nasty cigarette butts for all you smokers. Put them out in a can or other recepticle & trash it later.
Even offering to take home someone's empties rewards $ at the end of the day. ;)
Also, avoid bringing glass if you can. If you do, take extra care of it so that it doesn't break. Many like to walk barefoot around these parties, and there's loads of dogs running too.

As with all alcoholic drinks, it is best to keep it on the 'down low' by pouring it into a cup. If you dont have, ask the organisers (usually by the DJ) for a cup- they always have extras.

I was there this past Sunday and actually commented on how clean it was....maybe someone had gone around already. Regardless I like Cherry Beach and the chilled atmosphere and hope it continues to be a part of Sundays for the rest of the summer.
