this is called DJing my friend.

Real DJs dig thru the dingiest crates in order to find the 'good records big name DJs don't play'. Wannabe DJs are the ones who play only the records the big DJs play.

good point... ive been searching long and hard for vinyls i dont hear on dj sets but only come up with a few.

keep in mind producers need to earn a living and the best way to promote their music is through djs meaning they send out their music to all djs.

i think producing tracks is the only way to go , if only it was that easy.

it's admittedly tougher to find unique stuff with trance, because one a track becomes big, it becomes really big, really quickly. And a lot of times that takes away the appeal of a track to someone like you who's going out of their way to find the undiscovered stuff.

Add that to the fact most of the really massive anthemic choons are produced by people who already have huge names in the business and that makes it even harder. If you're really looking to add unique track or two to a set, it'd probably be a lot easier to look in the direction of tech trance or pure techno, but if that isn't your style, then in a pinch tossing in an older anthem people have stopped playing once in a while might do the trick. Or like you said....production.

The other answer to this is to do what soups does.....play tunes nobody at all likes! You can be sure none of the big dj's will be playing the crap soups plays because it's all :toothless

move somewhere where trance isnt as prolific and you can get away with playing the \"big\" records without losing your identity (i think) ;)

go into the amateur music producers forum and listen to some of their stuff. lots of raw and quality unreleased stuff there from time to time.

though if you're looking specifically for vinyl... for ideas you can check out the top 10/20/50 lists in the music discussion forum, check out audiojelly, beatport, and other online sites (juno.co.uk has samples online) for music recently released or as mentioned hit the record stores and search away.

i remember reading somewhere that james zabiela, though not a trance dj, spends heaps of time at record stores listening to stuff. i don't think he specifically looks for stuff that's unheard of (or maybe he does) but more of what he likes musically and feels will work well in his sets.
