Classic Bass Sound

I'm trying to make a type of bass sound, that has been used alot in Trance and early 90's tunes in general, here is an example of what i mean:
http://www.ivuk.org/hosted/hard2get/Bass011.wav
It's not just that sound i want to create though, it's that *type* of sound in general.
Anyway, i've found out how to get that sound to some extent, but still can't get it right. I know that 2 certain bass sounds need to be layered, but i can't manage to make the final sound plucky like it should be, is there a trick to this or am i just not doing it right to begin with? |

To me, that sounds like a simple saw bass. Fast envelope with a suboscillator as well. Most likely the sub is a triangle. Its definantly not hard to make ;). Name a subtractive synth and Ill see about making the patch for you.
[Edit:] Seems like a square wave and changing the pulse might be the better way to go actually. I'll look into it more.

It seemed like a pretty simple sound to me too untill i tried to create it myself, i can create most sounds, but i've never been able to do that one. I can mostly get the sound, which is a saw waveform, layered with a square waveform an octave lower, and changing the PW (as you said). I was told that the sound that i gave a link to, was created on a TB 303, which only has one oscilator, so i went into Rebirth where there is conviniently 2 TB303 emulator's and tried to re-create it, and got close enough, so tried to do the same on my Bass Station (you can't use 2 oscilators on one synth because the filter settings are different for each layer, but correct me if i'm wrong), but when the 2 sounds are added together, they phase each other out slightly, and generally dosn't sound right anyway, so i assumed there was more to it.
But i could just be doing it wong to begin with like i said :) |

| Subtractor in Reason can create that sound very easy. Also, you could use a TB-303 emu like ABL. :) |

Its a preset on a Yamaha DX100- called 'solid bass'. One of the most famous and used presets of all time actually -for all you fellow trainspotters, go listen to 'saturday night' by whigfield if you want to hear the solid bass in all its glory, or gat decor 'passion' .It also graces loads of old detroit techno, and a hell of a lot of house in the late 80s/early 90s when the DX FM synths were THE ones to have. Dx100 and 21 are 4 op Fm synths as opposed to the Dx7 which is 6op (op=waveform for those not FM nerdy)
not hard to make on any synth really- could knock one up on a TB 303 Mc 202 or Sh101 in a couple of minutes. Just lay off the resonance! Still wont have the rubberyness of the Fm patch tho, and like with most things, it just wont be the real thing.
I have the settings directly from my DX here...but as not many of you use old dxs or fm synths, and even less of you know how to program FM, its a bit pointless me posting it!
Anyway- enough trainspotting- its a classic!

Hey. You could post it anyway. I'd love to look at it. My dad has a DX7 and I have FM7. Not sure of the compatability differences of sending sysex from a DX100 though. I'm guessing it wont work but I've never tried sending from a similar synth in the same series but I guess we'll see.

Havent posted the sysex, as they arent compatible via sysex:
The dx100/27 is 4op- and the dx7 is 6 op, so not compatible.
However, you CAN modify the code slightly and it [should] work. May need some tweaking a tad tho!
This is as it is on the Dx100/27 as factory preset:
PitchModSens=5 AMS=0 0000 EGbias=0(for all ops) KeyVol=0(for all ops)
[OP1] Ratio=0.500 Detune=0 AR=31 D1R=9 D1L=0 D2R=0 RR=8 OutLevel=99 RS=1 LS=0
[OP2] Ratio=0.500 Detune=0 AR=31 D1R=9 D1L=0 D2R=0 RR=8 OutLevel=67 RS=1 LS=0
[OP3] Ratio=1.000 Detune=-3 AR=31 D1R=17 D1L=0 D2R=0 RR=8 OutLevel=64 RS=1 LS=0
[OP4] Ratio=1.000 Detune=0 AR=31 D1R=16 D1L=3 D2R=7 RR=8 OutLevel=70 RS=0 LS=0
ALG=2 FBL=7 LFO=tri LFOspeed=25 delay=0 PMD=7 AMD=0 SYNC=off
If you want to try it on a dx7, then when translating the code to a 6op, the ALG (bottom left of what ive put above) should be 14 and the ops should be moved as follows:
DX7 op1= ignore/leave blank
DX7 op2=ignore/leave blank
DX 100 op 1= dx7 op 3
DX 100 op2= dx7 op 4
DX 100 op 3 = dx7 op 5
DX 100 op4 = dx7 op 6
Here is a link to more info on converting 4 op to 6 op- bit of in depth reading/comversion required, so dont even bother if you cant get your head around basic synthesis!!
Both of those conversion methods are slightly different...but as I dont have a 7 myself, I cant really test it out. Reports are good though
This is why FM can be such a mother****** to program!
I have a couple of FM synths, and you can get this sound on all of them with no trouble. Preset on my Juno as well sounds remarkably similar.
Failing that, just buy a 100- they are still relatively cheap..ish
Have fun! |

Hey. Oh yeah. I knew I had heard the sound before and when you said Juno I immediately remembered the patch on my dads Alpha Juno. My memory is failing me which number but yeah. I know what you are talking about now. Lets see if FM7 will take this sysex data now :P.

yeah its an alpha juno 2 I have (same as the Alpha 1 bt with a bigger velocity sensitive keyboard ):) hoovertastic
If that doesnt work, I have another set of values from one i programmed on my FB-01's (I have 3 of them :stongue: ) which sounds pretty hot- and started life as a factory preset horn sound....:disbelief
Again, same conversion will need doing to a 6 op synth/software. |

Hey. Ok, I'm reading that link you have in your post and I'm having trouble with converting the envelope. It says multiply by 3 (fine) but then says add on 10 which brings me to 103 but the max is 99. I guess it says just mess with it a bit but I'm thinking this may change the sound a bit. Guess well see.
Cheers,

All the envelopes on 4 ops max out on 31...so thats basically maximum I would imagine.
Curse yamaha and their lack of sysex backwards compatibility :crazy: |

@IDarkISwordI
Hi.
It is definately the preset "LatelyBass" from the classic Yamaha DX-7 (or TX81z in rack version). I would say it has been used on approx 85 percent of all dance tunes in the great nineties...
Anyway, if you have the FM7 (or a DX-7 or TX81z) you can get the exact sound by loading the SysEx from the preset "LatelyBass". I can extract it from my TX81z, but it is stored in my parents basement, so it will take me a few days before I can do so.
Othwerwise try to google a bit on LatelyBass. I am positive you can find the SysEx laying around on the net somewhere.
Regards
