| you can used wired ethernet, all you need is a crossover cable and set up an ad-hoc network. bluetooth or firewire will also work. or just buy a wireless PCI card or usb adapter for your desktop. |

a wireless pci card, so I don't need wireless router to broadcast a signal? I think I do, because the wireless pci card only receives signals
what about a usb2 to usb2 connection? I think ethernet (cable) to ethernet will work too right? |

Another way is to buy a wired router, they're really cheap now, about $20, so it does not cost much extra compared to crossover cables. Most routers have a firewall to protect from internet attacks so it's a good idea to have one. You can set up a home network and plug your laptop and desktop computers into the router and transfer info.
This can also be done with a wireless router even if you don't want to use wireless yet, by plugging your computers into the wired ports on a wireless router, there are usually 4 ports. Most people use a wired connection from their desktop computer to the wirelss router, since the hardware is usually at one location. However you can alternately use a wi-fi PCI card in your desktop computer. That's what my friend does, he has his desktop computer on a wheeled desk that can be moved around the house.
The wireless cards can transmit and receive.
Setting up the network software can be a little tricky, but usually "wizard" software will pop up when you install the router and help you to create the network.
I use a wireless network all the time to transfer files between my computers, works great, using a Linksys WRT54G wi-fi router. |
