Soho for sure... look on a map of Manhattan at the following box: From Houston street (north edge) down to Canal street (south edge) and from 6th avenue (west edge) to Broadway (east edge) those are the 4 corners of the Soho shopping neighborhood. If you just walk south down Broadway, you can do enough shopping for 3 hours just on that steet, without even wandering west. But some of the best little (and sometimes expensive :p ) stores are west of Broadway, on side streets such as Prince st. and Spring st.

The soho/village/west village/st.marks is an awesome place to go to to walk around and shop or to go eat :D thats downtown :D people from all walks of life. I also love Battery Park City and adjoining parks by the Hudson river, just to walk around in. that park is beautiful.

I like Soho, but I don't know how congested it is on a Friday during work. Sometimes the swarms of people are unbearable (usually Saturday afternoons are the worst). But there's usually good eye candy, so...

Battery Park during the day is very touristy. I work right next to it and find it to be quite congested most of the time, including Saturdays when the work crowd isn't in full force. The view is good from the park over the Hudson and to the Statue of Liberty, though.

St. Marks is great if you want sushi, used CDs, or fetish wear. :)
