Ofcourse. That is, if commercialism doesn't go against your integrity. Some people like commercial dance music, euro-trance and such. So to them, producing prog-trance or symphonic pieces could be going against their artistic integrity. I'm just saying, I've spoken with alot of "hot" producers who have flat out admitted to thinking tracks they've released were far from good, but that "cash is king so who cares".

Quite true though. The trance scene out there is so sad, I don't know if I should laugh or cry. So many "artists" out there are signed and famous, because they are great producers, but unfortunately have less soul to put into their music than GWBush has compassion for communist muslims who sleep with his daughters. Still, they're on big labels and so their sells. The thing is, if you get with a "hot chick", all the DJs out there, will play your , cause you hot chick flashes her eyelashes and you're set. I've sent out material to top jocks and labels who haven't even returned my calls, let alone spun the tracks. But when they've become signed and the label sends them out...

"ooh, could this be the new TRACK OF THE WEEK? I THINK SO!!! TOP STUFF, DEFINATE CLASS, WILL CANE THIS!" :eyes:

Oooook.

There are ofcourse less evil labels, but basically if you want a fair deal out of your signing, you'd better get to know the people you're hooking up with, cause it's much easier on the conscience to screw someone over whom you don't know. That's why girls who are intimidated by other girls, either go all catty straight off, or try to become best friends so they can be catty behind their backs. What you want is the catty straight on person, whom you can confront, straight off... or if you're lucky enough, a hot chick who isn't catty. Are we still talking about labels? :haha:

Anyhoo... were were we? Basically, if you want to get signed today, the best way of doing that, is not being at all innovative. Give the labels exactly what they have, but with a different melody, and you'll be set. That's the reason we're getting so many e producers and tunes out there today, because it's so easy to just copy everyone else in the desperate attempt to get signed. You need lots of drive (the more the better), a super-simple hook (preferably just the "hoo" cause a "hook" might be a bit too complex), decent to good production skills (no you don't need to know about music, as long as you can make the production sound clean, or cleanish if you've got enough drive) and a complete lack of artistic integrity. If you've got that, then you're set to become the next big thing to hit the trance scene. Then email Armada or some Armada-wannabe-label started by any of the billion bedroom DJs out there who want to use their label to make it big as DJs and producers.

A cynic, me? Puhleease... :o

Sounds like me

That's very wrong indeed. There's nothing wrong with 'us' coming back to these forums where we all grew up somehow...

I'm not the kind of person who would think "this isn't good enough for me anymore" or something like that (like some do that I will not call by name). It would be a rather immature thought I think :)

Christian hits the nail on the head when it comes to the trance scene nowadays. People will just be forced to like a track somehow because it was playlisted everywhere, or it's a straight awful track from a well-known and overhyped producer that shouldn't even get signed a couple of years ago, but does now due to the immense amount of friendly politics going on. Alot of pseudo-djs nowadays play the same crappy stuff armin plays - why - to get noticed perhaps? If I were to start dj'ing, NONE of the tracks in ASOT would ever make it into my playlist (well, with the possible exception of one perhaps).

The 'border', as you would call it, for producers to be able to sign up with labels has but become incredibly low, to the extent that ALOT of e tracks are seeing the light of days and overflow the scene; which in its wake leaves the real quality tracks overshadowed. I also think none of these tracks will ever be even able to consider a classic in the making. Mostly because of their focus on quantity rather than quality (Christian said simpler melodies, this is all but very very true and awful to see).

Armada is the only platform today that has got an influence. Whereas there were an incredible amount on different interpretations and styles in trance towards the change of the millennium, this is just gone and gone so it seems. It's sad... VERY sad to be a part of this today... :(

The best comparison I can give about labels is that labels are a lot like chicks.

Even if you're no mack daddy, there's always at least one chick out there for you. She may not be the best looking, but she appreciates you more than any other woman does.

Someone who does get a lot of chicks has something going for him that does interest them. He may be very attractive, he may have a lot of money, he may be very romantic, or he may tell girls exactly what they want to hear. Any of these qualities will make you a chick magnet. Hot chicks attract other hot chicks. If a hot chick sees you're with a hot chick, that shows the other hotties that you know how to get with them, therefore creating competition. The more chicks you have the more you have to choose from.

Same way with labels... even if you're not the mackdaddy hot fire skills producer, there's always at least one label out there for you. It may not be the biggest, but that label may appreciate your music more than any other one does.

Someone who does get a lot of labels interested in their music has something going for him. He may be a very skilled producer, he may have a lot of money, or he may tell the labels exactly what they need to hear. Any of these qualities will make you a label magnet. Big labels attract other big labels. If a big label see's your with another one, that shows the other big label you're skilled enough or know how to get with big labels, therefore creating competition. The more labels you have interested in your music, the more you have to choose from.

Notice there are more qualities than being a skilled producer. That's why there's a lot of crap being released. The artist may have present an alterior quality to the label that maybe isn't so musical, but one that will sell and that the label would invest their time and money into.

haha thats a great post :D like the way u put it, but unfortunatly, i dont have the luck i do with girls as i do with music ;)

but anyways ur right, therel always be atleast one label out there for anyone, but u have to be 100% sure about ur track... meaning mastering the best u can, and making sure everything is done and good... best thing to do is to compare your tracks quality to other tracks regarding structure and so on

as for which label to send to, you have to get into the "scene" a little and find out whats released on what label, that way you know what style they want and you know who ull target...

thats that,
good luck m8

o and one more rule! NEVER give up, EVER ;)

peace

humm... you think catchy hook and drive is for commercial music only?
i think you can be super creative and unique and still incorporate some nice hook and drive.

But i think you were refering mostly to song who are limited to only catchy hook and drive without more substance.... then i would agree with you
GRW
I'm gonna have to agree with Rusch 100%. Good post man!

Yeah, you're right. I do mean more of your second description, as drive and catchiness aren't limited to commercial music - just look at joker jam - innocense, pvd - for an angel, gurjit delay - choral reef, solar stone - 7 cities etc. They're proof that hooks ofcourse are great, but they don't have to be cheap. Lots of "hit" tracks nowadays are just drive, not even having anything that even seems like a hook.
