When I used to use AOL, groups in the warez scene would upload files from a warez group onto the AOL mail system and spread it through chat room servers. The tags were in part identification, and part bragging. AOL's mail system "flags" pieces with greater than 15meg attachments so each thing was split and zipped a few different ways. Back then, 56k modems were most common, so if you all of a sudden lost a mail, but needed a certain version because it was part of a split zip file, you could go on and find another copy using the tags from the different groups and matching it with your files. So, in conclusion :), these groups are basically advertising what they've accomplished when they throw on a tag like that, but it does sometimes serve a purpose. However, with MP3 it is generally advertisement.

Hope that answers your question.

it's also to show who actually made the first release of the song/set
just like TA puts their url at the end of the songs on this site, bmi and other groups like them put their "tags" at the end as a commercial for their group. If all the good releases out there are by one group, everyone will be wanting to join them, and they get all the good recruits
Also it's so ppl know where to give credit

give credit where credit is due
