so i been living in toronto for two years now and i still get confuzzled about what cities make up the GTA.

so exactly how many cities are there and which cities to be exact?

which cities have thier own transport system and town council?

and why is toronto ontario's capital while ottawa is in ontario and is the nation's capital?

YAY Grade 9 Geography.

Every province and territory have respective capitals.

Ontario - Toronto
Quebec - Quebec City
Alberta - Edmonton
British Columbia - Victoria ... and so on and so forth ...

Ottawa is the FEDERAL capital of Canada. Located there is the Federal Government (i.e. Parliament) and at this level is conducted all matters of business that affect the country as a whole. At the provincial level (i.e. Toronto - Queen's Park) only matters that involve the provincial level are dealt with (education, health care, etc.)

The location of Ottawa is coincidental. It could be in Nunavut.

This is much like how in the States, Washington D.C. is the federal capital.

Washington D.C. (District of Columbia) which encompasses parts of Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia - all of which also have their own respective capitals.

Maryland - Annapolis
Virginia - Richmond
West Virginia - Charleston

Hope this helps :)

Actually, there is a big reason why the capital is where it is...

I know. ;)

I'm just saying that if the same of all those reasons applied to another province, it would be coincidental that say Edmonton and Ottawa were both in Alberta. Or St. John's and Ottawa both in Newfoundland. I just interpreted the question as asking why 2 'capitals' were in the same province.

Because after all, Nunavut has a capital too. :p

Hmm, I believe we were taught this in Grade 4 or 5... then again, I went to a bilingual school and had pretty much exclusively French until Grade 6.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metropolitan_Toronto

you may have heard the terms "North York," "Etobicoke," etc.... those are former cities within the old Metro Toronto... now unified in the City of Toronto
