Actually, Hardcore it isn't entirely about oil. While you cannot deny that oil is a big part of why our country has insisted in medling with the Middle East, there are many in our government who believe America to the last last great empire. No, I am not kidding. Those who surround Bush seem to be of the mind that they will do anything to make sure no other country rivals the U.S. in power, mainly in the form of nuclear arms. Now, because of paranoia of Iran and Iraq developing these arams and then giving the arms over to terrorists, certain members of Bush's cabinent felt we should launch preventive wars against he axis of evil and those who align themselves with the axis. This is another added, and perhaps more important dimension to why we are over there. You see, we are not only attempting to try and protect ourselves, but our strong alliance with Israel compells us to protect them too. In the eyes of those in power, all muslims are potential threats.
But, why are we in Iraq? They didn't have these weapons, they do have oil, and they weren't to any of our intelligence's knowledge aiding terrorists. According to Richard Clarke, "Rumsefeld complained that there were no decent targets for bombing in Afghanistan and that we should consider bombing Iraq, which he said had better targets. I first I thought Romsfeld was joking. But he was serious and the President did not reject out of hand the idea of attacking Iraq." The war with Iraq was not just for oil, but also to present a facade of winning a war against terrorism. What the hell would we have done when hundred of thousands of our ground troops invaded Afghanistan, kick sand around? Who would we have captured, surely not Bin Laden. With Iraq, we knew we could get Saddam. We knew we would have a symbolic victory for all of America and the world to see. The only problem is, they underestimated the intelligence of the world. Rather than eating the out of their hands, the world asks why are we there, just as this thread has? The problem is, no one is answering. All we can do is attempt to get as much information from the people in power as possible, and perhaps by piecing a puzzle of quotes and documents, one day we will find out the real reason we invaded Iraq. |

| @ kushpainting: Dude, the war has everything to do with oil and not some symbolic victory. Now, I'm not saying that the war is soley about the monetary benefits of the oil, but, installing militray bases in Iraq, selling the oil feilds to American/Multinational corporations. It's about controlling the one resource everyone is dependent on. And controlling it is power. Check the State Department History, 1945, (volume 8 I think) described as "a stupendous source of strategic power, and one of the greatest material prizes in world history" (referring specifically to Saudi Arabia, but the intent is more general, extending to the Persian Gulf region and Iraq). |

There are quite simple ways of dealing with terrorism and terrorist threats that originate within your own country. The only problem is, most politicians are so worried about their personal reputation (and how many votes they'll lose at an election) that none of them ever actually put the ideas forward.
Threatening to deport every Muslim in your country if a few fanatics blow up a train station is a little over the top, but they should certainly deport the terrorists themselves, and their close family as well. From my experience, I've seen that relationships are far stronger within a typical asian family than they are within, say, a typical western family, and so the threat of having your family made homeless if you commit any terrorist act should be enough to deter them, for the sake of their families wellfare.
That is, of course, assuming the family know nothing of the terrorists actions. I've got a sneaking suspicion that the families of the london bombers knew all too well what the bombers were up to, but that's another story.
So yes, it's harsh to threaten to deport people and their families, but to be honest I think it's worthwhile. I for one would feel a lot more secure knowing that appropriate deterrents were in place to stop these lunatics. But like I say, nobody has the guts to say anything like that when it matters... |

I forgot the exact projection of North America, Europe, South America and East Asia but most oil reserves (other than the middle east), are projected to be depleted very soon (within the next 2 - 2 1/2 decades). Which is why the US and other Western Powers (it's allies) are obsessed with controlling the oil of the persian gulf region (also to build a pipeline). |

"Nobody knows or can know how much oil exists under the earth's surface or how much it will be possible to produce in the future
All numbers are, at best, informed estimates. Within the broad concept of oil 'reserves' there are several key distinctions: ultimately recoverable resource, proved, probable and possible reserves and oil in place"-BP Website or your link.
You see my point exactly they don't know how much oil is in siberia yet so you never know if siberia has more or close to the amount of oil the middle east has. I should get my dads opinion on this he is a chemical engineer for UOP(thier an oil company). |

the oil belongs to OPEC genius. it will always belong to OPEC. OPEC will always determine the price in which the world will pay for it. it's about stabilizing the oil producing region for the eventual production turndown. King Faud knows this and he's glad Saddam and his sons are gone. Iran knows this (nuclear power plants), they are glad Saddam and his sons are gone, as well as the rest of the OPEC countries without saying.
what you have fallen for is the lie perpetuated by the anti-war establishment and internet hysteria. |
