Does anyone know how to make patches like the bass used in Robert Miles - Children? The main bass notes that drive the song.
How is that kind of patch made?
thank you |

| sounds like filter envoloped saw with some resonance... so the sound is more accented... and some chorus... to phatten it up. :) |

I don't have the track in front of me but I think I remember what it is (this will make a good bass basis (bassis?) regardless)... try this:
Two square oscs. One +3 cents the other -3. Might need to improvise with the phases because the current will cause the beating effect = bad. 4-pole filter, not 2-pole (will help it cut through the mix). Cut-off pretty low and resonance ample but lower than cut-off. Amp envelope: Amp, Sustain set to 0. Release hardly raised but enough to make it sound natural. Decay about half-way... experiment with that. Filter envelope same as amp envelope with a little less decay and raise the knob till it sounds right. Experiment from there... and it's going to depend on the synth you use to get the sound just right. I think there may have been a little sawtooth or something like that in there to give it a little growling harmonics... can't remember =\. Some fx probably, and maybe a center-panned delay with about 3 ms or so and low feedback to with the harmonics a little further. Ah crap I was thinking of the Dream version of Children when I did this... I can't remember what it's like in the original mix (which I despise, so don't ask me to listen ;)). Lotta help I am :( |

| it had more of a sawtooth texture last time i heard it... chorus kind of phattens it up a bit... maybe it's a PWM Square? but I highly doubt it is a full on square... or could be.. now that I hear it with some resonance on the filter decay... same thing you said, I don't have the track in front of me to judge. |

Its an organ sound.
Robert Miles used a Korg M1 preset called 'organ2' on children-a very famous preset- almost as famous as the DX solid and lately presets as mentioned in the classic bass sound thread last week.
Heres a very Robin S-esque snippet of that sound for you I have just uploaded....
http://s44.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=...D53THY00959ZJAP Im sure you can recognise the sound itself straight away- very distinctive! The reverb is part of the sound too as preset.
Most early 90s synths had tonnes of organ presets- but this is probably one of the best sounding one s ofr electronic stuff as it has a very nice thump to it and sits well in a mix- and its certainly one of the most over used. As used on countless US house/garage tracks and loads of early house stuff.
Try a Jazz organ for something similar- although you may need to run it through an LPF and change the envelope slightly.

As softsynth you can choose the Z3ta+. It has some different organ waves. And its great for making bass sounds!:tongue3 |

I do believe that the main offbeat bass is made of FM synthesis, a variation of the famous solid bass preset. Anyway, I heard some very similar preset on one of the FM vsts, it wasnt FM7, but i cant realyl remember.
The beginning bass string is an organ sound, there are some purpose specific VSTS that could get the job done just as fine. |

Thanks for the information Freak. It's not the bass that i'm asking to learn..but when it comes to extra info, i never refuse. Plus I love that organ sound anyways.
..here is the bass timbre I would like to program.

not the kick..not the woodblock-type thing... just the offbeat bass.
thanx!!!! |

you should try novation bass station vst, its perfect for this kind of sound
saw waveform
some resonance
etc
i already found 4 presets which are almost exactly the same as in children, just some minor tweaking and you're done |
