for those who own a drum pattern generator

Hi all.

I know its probably useless posting this here again but here goes

I'm after a drum pattern generator (HARDWARE!!!) rather than electric drums for two reasons.

1. I can't play drums because of a coordination problem.
2. Electric Drums cost around $10,000!

So anyways, I'm after a reliable, easy to use drum pattern generator (for BreakBeat/BigBeat drums and Trance kick drums)

I'm after one that is capable of the following type of drum beats from these songs:

The Prodigy - Mindfields
The Prodigy - Diesel power
The Prodigy - Narayan
The Prodigy - Smack My Bitch Up

Fatboy Slim - You're Not From Brighton
Fatboy Slim - Acid 8000

I can't tell you how stressed out I always get, trying to create hihats like the ones in "Diesel Power". You know what I mean... those type of break beat hihats. It's really hard when your an aspiring musician but your trying to get good sounds from ty samples. I can do EQ-ing, pitch shifting and distorting as much as I want but it's time to face the facts...

I need the hardware to get the good sounds.

so, finally the big question...

what is the absolute best drum pattern generator available?

note: there are three things it has to have:

1. It absolutely must have a feature that allows you to mute elements of the beat. This is because I will more than likely want to add effects to kicks and snares.

2. For the songs I mentioned above, I should add that I also meant it has to have those paticular kicks hihats and snares.

3. It obviously has to have output so I can record to my PC through my Audigy 2 ZS box

I'm willing to pay $6000 Aust. for one, but I don't want to buy second hand stuff off e-bay.

P.S

Don't worry, i'm not some lazy guy that cant be bothered trying to make my own samples... In fact I'm well aware that nearly any sound can be acheived if you try hard enough but the simple fact remains that all the hihat samples are too short for what I need; and they are also too low quality.

You need a sampler my friend...

All of fatboy slims/norman cooks stuff is done on an Atari and a couple of older akais , and Liam from the prodigy used the sequencer built into a roland W-30 up until half way through the fat of the land when he upgraded to a mac, and these were both used to trigger his akais.

you have 6000$ to play with? well....pick anything from the akai range and maybe a buy a few sample cds if you cant be bothered to dig out your own, and you will still have change to buy a new car.

You could go two routes-
-get a sampler and trigger it from your pc.
-get a sampling drum machine- something like an MPC 2000/3000 and sequence it internally.
-get a sampler, and trigger it from a dedicated drum machine. Not the best idea as you will still have to edit/program your patterns anyway.

Big breat and breakbeat is basically cut up loops retriggered in different places. You edit it so it has several start points, which when retriggered effectively give you a new break.

No magical formula for the rhythms themselves, unless you want to go down the MIDI file route, which will sound pants, unoriginal and boring.

I would highly recommened you track down an akai S950, S1000 or a 3000XL...only s/hand im afraid as they no longer make them. But all classics in their own right and absolutely bomb proof. Look at an MPC 3000/2000XL too as this may suit your purposes

Hell, you could buy Recycle and use the other 5,700 dollars to buy vinyl records. Buy tons of old records. Collect them obsessively. Haunt the thrift shops. Never listen to any music without an audio recorder app paused and waiting to go. Completely change the experience of listening to music buy isolating each and every sound and drum hit in your mind. Do hours of online research to find out what studio The Rolling Stones recorded "Satisfaction" in, then buy anything else you can find recorded in that studio just because you love the reverb sound. You may be about to enter a whole new world of geekdom. Or maybe you just wanna do a cover of "Praise U." Anyway, that's a lot of money to throw around. Have fun.

spinwarp tutorial A tutorial on gneral drum technique for D'n'B, slow it down and you've got a type of breaks.
hattrixx breakbeat tutorial One of the most detailed tut's I've seen
google search
Dogsonacid threads of interest a whole bunch of crap here on slicing sequencing, eqing, editing reediting sampling etc. of breaks and additional goodies on other forms of audio mayhem

I personally don't think that there's a need for a superexpensive hardware generator just to produce a nice swingy hatline sitting over a 2-step break. Most of the ones you hear on other tracks are sampled, eq'd, sliced and resequenced. That can be pretty time consuming but very rewarding. You don't even need to play drums, at all. My current set up has Recycle 2.0, and M-audio Trigger Finger, and if I remember I'll post some samples of a few recent failstarts when I get home. Oh yeah I've been playing round with Fxpansion Guru, that prog is crazy, amazing drums samples, lots of freedom to fx each sample, just great potential as a centerpiece for any producer that likes them drums. The sample library has kits that range from standard acoustic ones that could be used in a blues or jazz song to fxed electronic kits for techno/trance, house, d'n'b etc. And also menedit, pick up the new computer music if you have a chance they have a great tutorial in it on breakbeat reconstruction
