Sorry for le hijack. Let me revert to serious (dot medicated) mode.
When a relationship goes through such a radical change, it's almost a certainty that one or both of the participants will be hurt. People are animals, and just like the animals we breed to be our pets, we fall into a routine which is both satisfactory and comfortable for us. Removing the 'us' from a relationship is somewhat of a paradigm shift in lifestyle and it should be understood that people will react with a cavalcade of responses, from mania to depression and all stops in between. The person with whom they were so close is lost (at least temporarily) as a confidant and a person to pass the time of their existence with; this can change the person's behaviors, emotions, and reactions permanently or temporarily...
For people to act depressed after a breakup is not uncommon; if they were the recipient (rather than the initiator) of the break-up, self-worth issues almost immediately crop up. However, like all loss, people should be able to cope in a timely fashion (perhaps proportional to the seriousness of the relationship in quetion). I don't start worrying unless the person shows no ability or desire to rouse from this state. |
