first of all, dont buy that book, you will learn much more from production forums + the book doesnt seem to be about production anyway

second:
most people say its best to start with fl studio
i agree on that, it has almost all the possibilities of all other programs, but its much easier to get into

you can also start with ableton live, which is today's most hyped sequencer (lot of pro's use it)... Also very easy to use.

+ dont forget owning these sequencers is not all you will need, you will also need some vst instruments + fx

please go to the production forum, you will get more help there + read all stickies in that section

No, seriously do buy the book.

It does have stuff about production and stuff about DJing. as it covers the modern dj which is a DJ and producer mixed into one.

Looks like it could be worth a look. Nice find.

Yes, FL Studio is very good. It's user friendly, yet surprisingly complex, especially when combined top VST plugins. It comes with a number of tutes and demos to get you started and because it's such a popular program there are loads of forums for tech support.

FL Studio comes with soft synths and fx already. Once you become more serious you do start to branch out, but some FL plugins can sound great. You can hear them put to good use in Lightworks/Icone's tracks.

To answer your question directly here are some popular programs that may interest you:
PRODUCT - COMMENTS

Sony Acid Pro 5.0 - Cut and Paste program. Very easy to use and pretty nice tool for amateurs or anybody looking to make a quick fix to a production.

Steinberg Cubase SX 3.0 - This program is significantly more advanced for producers. You can do a lot with this program, for me, is considered my standard for producing music.

Propellerhead Reason 3.0 - This has what the previous two have and more. Reason beats the previous two in professionalism. Features a lot more instruments.

I believe all three feature ReWire, but go check. ReWire is a sort of import/export option which allows you to work with your production on all three programs regardless of compatibility. I know the explanations are broad, but you can look at each programs website which is why I don't bother to write more.
