Maybe it has something to do with the extreme electric storms sweeping across Southern Ontario at the moment.

What is truly pathetic is that Canada uses the second most resources in the world per person. That is why we have these problems. People waste, waste, waste.

Does our resident economic advisor care to leave mention that we also produce more per person than most other countries? Or is consumption somehow more important than production in whatever screwy economic philosophy you believe in?

We have these problems because our GOVERNMENT-RUN power generation and distribution systems are ridiculously obsolete and they're refusing to spend a cent on upgrading them. Instead they shut down coal plants due to "environmental" concerns during one of the hottest summers ever, when electricity demand is going through the roof. And then they blame us for using "excess" power.

Newsflash: Electricity demand and consumption per capita has gone DOWN on average over the past 10 years. It is not us, the consumers, that are the problem. How would you feel if there was a food shortage in Canada, and some genius came along and told us it was because we eat too much and we need to start eating smaller meals and less of them per day?

Here's how we can improve the power situation in Canada:

- Deregulate it! Yes, we all know that the price will go up, but how can we ever expect to keep our power grids running if we're purchasing electricity at $0.25/kWh and reselling it at $0.05?

- Force the government buildings to turn their heat and lights off at night. They are notoriously wasteful in the true sense of waste.

- Pass the ing legislation amending the TPA to allow landlords to install suite-level meters without having to get consent from the tenants. (10 years of submetering have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that consumers use less electricity when they actually have to pay for it, but the McGuinty government is delaying the legislation in order to make deals enabling them to own and control all the meter hardware and thus profit from the legislation.)

- Try NOT letting in more than 1 million refugees and illegal immigrants per year and putting them on welfare so they can get themselves a nice electrically heated apartment. Higher population means higher electricity demand.

That is all.

I promptly packed my and went home before it had the opportunity to turn back on.

I am now answering work emails (from home) and drinking Robert Simpson Ale.

<------ championstyle.

I missed the power outage by 1/2 a frickin' block!!! (Yonge & Bloor)

makes no sense.

Diginut: while I agree with you that energy is cheap(er) and that we should pay more, privatizing is a very bad idea, look at California, do some research on that matter. Because if you think the provincial govt is cheap, well, how will the private company be any better?? it'll cut corners for dividends.

Electing a strong enough govt to invest the billions needed into (green) power plants should be your priority not privatization.

This is how good this is:

Power goes out yesterday, I eject and go home for beer.

Power outage yesterday fries our CISCO router - but we don't realize until today when we go back to the office to do work. No internet = no work. I eject and go home for beer.

Day 2 of sitting at home in boxers + t-shirt, answering work emails, drinking beer is even better than day 1.
