SO Here's my situation...

I've got something like $200/month that I can set aside to save up for either...

a) a car: would be no more than $6000, used, and would provide me with unlimited transportation to gigs, since using my parents' cars isn't working out due to timing mishaps.

OR

b) an apple G4 Powerbook: no more than $3500, plus maybe logic pro for $1000, and maybe $500 more on other needed software; this thing would allow me to take on contracted/freelance audio jobs here and there to get more cashola.

My predicament and the terms:
I could finance item b, but not item a, so I would have to save up for item a. Item a needs insurance, which I know I could afford anyways, but item b doesn't need insurance. Item a facilitates travel to gigs, which can potentially provide income, while item b can immediately provide income, pending available jobs. both items can be facilitators in both career and leisure.

Either way I'd lneed to get both sometime soon, but I can't quite figure out which of the 2 I should get first. they're both within a close enough price tag to get at either time.

One more thing.... don't try to change my choice into a PC laptop. I've already made my decision on the G4 and it's not changing. There's particulars I seek, and I'm not changing to a IBM-based laptop.

..SO.... which is best to get first? Any1 got any suggestions?? ideas? comments?? advice?? ... all much appreciated.

I was about to make a smart-assed remark, but you and I are of a rare breed, Aaren. lol. Music is Life, and vice versa. ;)

I don't know you that well, but it's my understanding that you take your music seriously. So trying to decide between a producer's swiss army knife and his chariot becomes that much harder of a decision.

Good on you for not having to pay out your.. Erm.. Nose for insurance, because I personally pay a small fortune. Sucks, but I need my wheels, or I'm screwed.

Then again, I put off owning the above mentioned wheels so that I could invest in an HP Pavillion ZE4300 Notebook. No, it's not an Apple, and no, it's not a powerhouse, but this thing has been my life for more than a few years. It's come time to retire her in favor of a younger, more attractive relative of hers (HP DV4030), but she's served me extremely well. Along with Ableton Live, a couple VSTs, loads of caffeine, alcohol and good advice, i've put out some reasonable sounding stuff. Not production grade (though many have disagreed), but we're getting there.

My advice: If you have a desktop, stick it out and keep pounding away on that thing 'till it bleeds. Get yourself a vehicle and reap the benefits that it'll provide.

However, if your desktop is running into the s and it's not worth keeping a hold of, get yourself mobile in notebook form. Apple is great and many producers swear by them, but Logic isn't the be all and end all, especially on tight budgets.

Regardless, either one is nice to have. Choose wisely, but whichever you choose, enjoy the f*** out of it.

Anybody that buys a laptop computer over a car deserves to be shot in the neck with a nailgun. Repeatedly.

You know what you must do, Aren.

Can you afford the maintance + insurance ? If so get a car ... it can last you much longer then Laptop
Tordan
I say get the G4. Use it to make money then buy the car. Having a car isn't going to make you any $$$. You'll end up spending more on gas, insurance & maintenance.

BUY the Power Book. But please wait, and I warn you, until Apple switches the powerbook over to intel chips. It'll be more power conservative, and we Intel is working on a laptop chip that'll run 64bit, which means more power to your applications hopefully, if they take advantage of 64bit.

Anyways, so if you save up the money before the intel powerbook, than buy the car, and wait for the powerbook line up to refresh. If you need a powerbook right now,...than go ahead and buy it, the thing won't be obsolete for another 5 years, but there is promise in the powerbook future that is holding me off for it, so I use my G5 now.

Yeah, but maintenance and insurace runs him in the hole HUGE! At least with a laptop, it'll be cheaper to upgrade every other year and he'll still be saving money after the money he wastes on a car. Also, gas, and finding a reliable used car that isn't a lemon. Geeze, cars are expensive beyond purchases. Oh and tickets, ing cops... and licensing, vehichle licensing, plates, oil changes, and the stupid emisions test if it wasn't recently done on the used car you want to buy.

:eyes:

I just don't know, if you factor in the yearly cost of owning a car it'd scare anyone away from buying any car :p

powerbook...cars a money pit whereas a laptop would help earn you money.
El Kay Dee
get that laptop....

i can borrow it too then

Dude

Car = Transportation
Transportation = Job
Job = Money
Money = G5

Plus if you wait Apple prices are going to drop significantly in the next year!

Get the Powerbook.

Yeah, you know that Intel Pentium M chip they put in all their mobile laptops? They're not as powerful in MHz but the real technology is the size and power consumption of the chip. As far as I know, (huge apple hobbiest) from what I've read on all the developer forums, and such, the intel technology does wonders for power consumption it uses up less. On top of that Intel is working on different chips with huge mobil power to be released soon, look up code name "Yonah — a dual core laptop chip". Apple has also tested out the developer machines the P4 3.2's with 512 RAM that the developers are getting now, the speed of the OS it self is actually improved and not as slow as many think. (which raises a question about why windows can't do things quicker) and so, when the mobile intel technology hits the apple mobile line up, expect to see battery life one of the big selling points, because it's going to be boosted significantly.

Pentium M's have been criticised for lack of power, but they're made for increased power conservation, and that's where people who know what they're buying end up buying Pentum M's over the greater GHZ laptops most likely for the reason that they travel or don't have access to a wall charger as much. Their is sooo much information surrounding this and what speculation is Apple will do in the future, I pretty much know the just of almost everything around this topic, so if you have more specified questions I'll be happy to answer more for you . :)

Just expect something great from Apple in the mobile arena next year.

This goes with out saying however, the technology on both sides of the fence, intel and mac, are equally matched and the G5 even holds the uperhand in the 64 bit arena (based on the average of many benchmarks done by many different people and organizations).
