just read the book
very compelling. Randall Kennedy did somewhat good job of covering all the bases, telling mostly of political issues with the n word. however, i feel that there was something missing, that he favored the word a little too much. he said that it was an important part of the african-american culture and that it shouldn't be legally stopped being used on TV etc, because it adds flavor, which makes up for the rare (bull) case of a bad incident.
i really didn't feel comfortable reading this book in open view of public (i often go to a coffe shop my friend owns down the street to redad etc. on weekends) due to the fact that the word ****** is on the front cover in huge block-faced letters. but i highly reccommend throwing it in the can and reading it while you're doing your thing, it provides some good insight. |

| i don't think it should be legally stopped either, are you going to go and tell every black person who uses the word ****** not to use it? i think there is a big diffrence between other people calling black people ****** in a hateful way or black people using it for whatever reason. I think we are all fully aware of where the word came from and out of what circumstances so why should we tip-toe around it and try and abolish the word all together. If you respect black people, don't call them ******s.. i don't think it needs to go any farther than that. |

im from the south here in the states.
me and my friends call eachother ******s all the time.
of course we dont say it if a black person is around.
we arent really racist.
i mean its like the same when we call eachother gay.
like "hey homo get me a beer."
we dont hate gays, we just like the word calling .
now we do differentiate between blacks and ******s.
blacks are just that, all encompassing.
now ******s are a subgroup of blacks.
down here, to us white folk, a ****** is a rude, thuglike, and otherwise negative black person.
example.
im coming home from work.
windows down, music up, like 10 and night.
car pulls up next to me at the light.
i notice 3 black people in the car, all windows down.
all of a sudden they start yelling something.
my first thought is are they ok, did something happen.
after looking to see what happened, i realised they were just yelling at me.
then i got scared.
are they yelling at me in a bad way?
are they threatening me?
are they yelling nice things at me ?? lol.
at that point i looked beyond blackness and labeled them ******s.
i do not like ******s, for they are socially bad.
and speaking of blacks.
i work for a cd store.
I CANT ING UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE SAYING.
I SPEAK ENGLISH NOT EBONICS.

Guys give each other crap. I call people vaginas too but I dont hate them (vaginas).
Theres nothing subliminal about name calling. Somehow I doubt that vibrating air molecules in certain patterns with your muscle sponge strings in your throat will so drastically change your brain chemistry that youll have to act against the chemical label in your brain that matched the air vibration pattern. |
