im translating a rapportage from Dutch into English, and i was looking up smth in a dictonairy, when i came across some expressions with our nice ppls in it:
Dutch Cap (thanx to whoever made this one up!!!)
Dutch courage
Dutch elm disease
I'm a Dutchman (found under Dutchman)
Dutch treat
Dutch uncle (to talk like a...)
if u dont know the expressions, look em up in a dictonairy, really quite fun to see how ppl (used to) look at us dutchies... |

some other words i came across in the same dictionary (for the ppl who want to know: its the Longman dictionary of english language and culture, from what ive heard one of the best dictionaries around):
hee-bie-jee-bies : nervous anxiety caused by fear
hee-haw : the sound made by a donkey (uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuhm.... o-kay)
Heineken : a type of beer made by the Dutch company Heineken. many people used the words 'heineken. refreshes the parts other beers cannot reach'. people sometimes jokingly use expressions based on these words when they are talking about other subjects. |
