It's a bit of swinging pendulum really. nVidia used to pwn, then ATI came out with the radeon 9x00 a few years ago now and took over, while nvidia became a joke with their nvidia hairdryer fx series.
Then finally they got some ground back with gf 6, and are good again.
Now you can kinda go either way, but it really comes down to budget as to which way you wanna go.

edit: and yes, athlon 64 definitely the way to go

my advice, monitor your bandwidth usage :P

How about decent advice and lock it down via MAC address?

WEP is an ENCRYPTION protocol (Wired Equivalent Privacy is what WEP stands for), it's not meant to be an Authenication protocol as such.

Considering your existing setup I suggest you get a Linksys WAG54G Wireless-G ADSL Gateway. This is $217 from Austwireless.

What you do here is plug your ADSL connection into that, and your existing PC into that also. Linysys are pretty much so the gun when it comes to wireless. Keep the away from the GMax or the SuperG based devices, they're a scam in real world usage.

Also, your internet connection is 1.5Mb/s, 802.11b is 11Mbit/s. So even the 802.11b devices are fine for fast net surfing. I'd advise getting a G, as it's just that much easier to copy files from one location to another @ 54Mb/s.

Cheers,

3200 should do fine!
but i state it again video card.. the past fortnight the new babies are comming out so its a good time to wait and let the older top model ones to come down.

The new video cards are now PCI express which means new mother board new socket etc. etc.
if you wanna go even more intense and a rich mofo you can get two of the same video cards and combine them (SLI).

Ok back to reality hehe CS source.. do you want Detail? or more FPS?
The more you pay the better detail, quality you pay for.

(Ati radeon X750 or higher, Nvidia 6600GT or higher) Middle range video card = approx. 300-500 (this should play cs nicely)

(Ati radeon X800) High end = approx 600-1200 (x2 if you want two of them :))

you seem to know your stuff buddy
I think I'll ask you :)

I'm after detail + fps, like a vcard thats a bang for my buck

Im budgeting around 1200, this is just solely for the box. Reckon you could list me the best components I can get for that price... Then I'd just go shop for those items and build it myself... BTW I'm not too fussed about the harddrives, more worried about the CPU/MOBO/RAM/VCARD etc

CHEERS DUDE :) much appreciated

Yes, but looking on Whirlpool, A LOT of people have issues with it. I suggest Linksys for quality. For 'can do the job, will save money in short term for a long term trade off on sanity' Billion is cool.

Pay more now, get quality. Save the frustration later.

Hey guys I work for DLINK technical support so if you need to know anything about wireless products just shout.

First off current DLINK products are not crap, I say that not just because I work for them (I usually put down the companies i work for) but the products are quite good. Most people say they are crap only because they are cheaper than most and they automatically think they are . Well off the record surprise surprise many of the components that more expensive brands *cough netgear,*cough Linksys uses dlink products or components so don't be fooled by the fancy name or price tag. Secondly they all up, and have their share of problems. It's only that dlink hold 20% of the home networking market, 11% to netgear, and something like 9% to linksys - that you may seem to hear more horror stories.

Personally Dlink wireless products are quite reliable as most brands are nowadays and if people are paying them out its only because they don't know how to use them properly or dont understand the nature of wireless technology.

ALso if you unsure about WEP, you can use WPA-PSK which is an authentication protocol. Most routers and AP's now support them.

Regardless if you use one or the other they are pretty safe but like someoen said not fail proof someone could eventually hack into them like people hack into NASA but like really who cares, your average Joe Neghbour is not going to spend hundreds of computing hours cracking into your computer just to retrieve your happy snaps? It's probbaly less painful just to steal your computer.

Lastly there are other secuirty measures you can use in routers such as the inherent FIREWALL and filters - such as mac filters, IP filters - and disabling SSID broadcasting (so the wireless network doesnt broadcast its name out your neighbours).

a good starting router would be a DI-524 (if you are hoping to still use your current *ethernet based* modem ADSL or CABLE, and the wireless adapter cards if you need them are DWL-G510 (PC) or DWL-G630 (LAPTOP). They run on G standard 54Mbps. ALternatively if you want a new DSL modem then you should get a DSL-G604T. It is a wireless router + onboard modem and also supports ADSL2/2+ which alot of ISP's are now offering, you might want ot think about that if you want the new ADSL2 speeds 12-20Mbps if I am correct. You can get the router + adapter pack for as little as $140.00 at most resellers but if you send me photos of your sister I can get them for you cheaper - staff discount.

P.S.
=================
Don't be fooled by 108 MBps, each brand hav e their own super G standard (108) however this hardly works in a normal house believe me on that, and youll probably only run about 60-70 and not worth the problems it causes.

Most houses have too much interference (cordless phones, microwaves) to efficiently produce 108 all the time. THe standard uses all 11 channels to transmit data, instead of just picking one channel as normal 54Mbs does. THis causes a heap of problems anyone unless you have a noise free environment which is highly unlikely. If it worked reliablly theyld already have standardised it.

Sorry about the RANT.

Interesting opinion there pimp. 2 ex employees of your both left due to e products generally(mind you that was a year and a bit ago). (K.lee and R.chow.)

Linysys is now owned by Cisco(per www.linksys.com), which runs over 70% of the internet's routers.

On a home WAP, I'd consider MAC based filtering to be good enough authentication; WPA-PSK is open to dictionary attacks and also adds CPU overhead to every packet.

I do, HIGHLY agree with you on the Super G...TOtal wank!

Oh yeah I totally agree most DLink products are , have you seen the media server? LOL -

yeah but the wireless products are pretty much standard across the board, regardless of brand, the company I work for also does tech support for NETGEAR as well and most of the staff for Netgear say netgear products are too. We also handle Cisco (not linksys) and they are not a happy bunch either. So really im sure they didnt leave cause the products were , the money is thats why they left =)
