When making your riff ,melody ,or arp
what are the main chords and scales that give you a more darker, harder style trance feel opposed to the happy trance.

It's got nothing to do with the key and everything to do with the chord progression. |

In any situation, if you want your riff sounding darker then all you have to do is try flattening notes ( shift them down a semitone ). The more flattened notes the darker the sound. |

i-VI (ie, C minor to A major) is a pretty dark progression |

As diginut said, it has nothing to do with the key.
However, diminished minor chords tend to give a much darker sound than natural minor chords. Natural minor chords give a more "sad" minor while "diminished" minor chords give a more "dark" minor chord.
In case you don't know what a diminished minor chord is, it is the exact same as a minor chord except the V (fifth note) is one semitone lower. |
