Just wondering if any of you TA's have travelled to the Mayan Riveria? I'm thinking of going in January, after the Christmas/New Years rush and was hoping for some reviews and hotel recommendations from some trusted people!
Thanks for any info you can give! |

I went to the Mayan Riveria back in May and i have to say its an absolutley amazing place to go. Its totally gorgous
i stayed at the Grand Pricipe Akumal resort which has three different hotels on one massive property... the beach is gorgous and the rooms and pool area are amazing its pretty big place and has a TON of things to do.. there is an entertainment area at the front of the property with shops and internet cafe and a bunch of restaurants and one of my favorite things about this place was that there were tons of beautiful birds lots of igaunas and geckos running around, and little pharo cats ( they are just wild domestic cats an dthey are ADORABLE) and i also say a monkey!!
i strongly suggest going here.... for some strange reason i can't post attachments but if you PM me your e-mail addy i'd be glad to send you some pictures

I work for a Wholesale Travel company (Holiday House) and Cancun is one of our specialty areas. First off if you wanna go its better to decide/book now as the closer you are to winter the less likely your gonna find anything as spaces fill up fast. Secondly, in terms of resorts the Principe Akumal is a very nice resort to go but other nice ones include any of the Riu chains, Reef Playacar chains, and Occidental, all are 4-5 star hotels with beautiful beaches, and tons of amenities. I wanna go to Cancun one day too and as the old adage goes
"What goes on in Cancun, stays in Cancun" :p |

My aunt and uncle stayed at a place around the Mayan region in March and liked it so much they ended up being there 3 weeks!
Apparently the resort was all built within the last 5 years (thus the amenitites and finish is modern, comfortable and enjoyable).
I'll email my aunt for the name and post it here when I get a reply. |

Thanks for the info guys! Keep it coming!! I feel much better booking with knowledge from people that have been there. The pictures in the travel magazines look so nice, but I'm sure we've all been in situations where the photos are nothing like what we expected! :eyes: |

BAHIA PRICIPE AKUMAL.......wow!!!
By far best hotel I've been to. It's split up into 2 parts...Akumal and Tulum. The beach is OK, not the best....i would say Cuba has the best beaches but were talking Mexico here. Sandy for maybe 30-50 feet then rocks, really nice if you snorkel btw.
Food is amazing, I think we had a choice of 3 Ala Carte (however you spell it) Restraunts. W/E you do if you go dont eat at the italian one....it was really bad. The others I went to was the Gourmet, had roasted duck with some crazy sauce with mash potatoes and a mushroom soup. The other was the Grill...pretty much bbq anything, but its got a whole lot more than just bbq. The regular buffet is HUGE, they have some really nice stuff, and every night is a theme so you dont get the same thing over and over.
Daytime activites, theres always something to do. Beer drinking contests, tequila contests, and that Hotel song dance (every hotel has thier own little song and dance that by the end of your trip just gets in you head lol). The place has 2 pools per hotel, 1 is a sports pool , the other is just general activities.
For nightlife, most people go over to the Tulum side of the hotel for the night shows because they have a huge amphetheatre. After that everyone goes over to the Hacienda...its like this cool recreation of a Mexiacan town or something. At 12 miidnight the Disco opens and its just party on from there.
If you want better rooms and a nicer overall hotel, go to Akumal because its newer. If you want to be closer to the nightlife, Tulum is your choice. Either way both are accesable by shuttle which is only a 2 minute ride.
I heard Ibero Star is a nice place to in the Mayan...check that out too, never been though....
Have Fun!! |

That is the place my aunt and uncle went.
Iberostar Paraiso Maya is the name of the resort. There are 4 Iberostar resorts on one stretch of beach - stay on one, use the facilities of all of them.
The Maya is the newest of the 4 (a newer one is under construction). The Maya is a 5-star resort and was just completed in December 2004.
