Professional Ear plugs
View this Thread in Original format

After arguing with a friend of mine to come out to a party, he finally agreed to see Carl Cox, he loved every second of it, but as a result he has lost something like 20 - 30% of his earing. No need to argue this part, a certain part of his ears are screwed. Weak ears I guess.

But, he loved every second. And he wants to go back...I have heard of professional ear plugs that are pricy but they block the decible levels that destroy the average ear. I just don't want those squishy yellow ones....

Does anyone know where I could get them for him?
How much they cost?
Does anyone use them currently?

Thanks alot

From a post of mine in that thread:

I have hereditary hearing loss in my family. On my mother's side everybody above 45 has hearing aids.

Got my hearing tested a year ago, my low frequency range is borderline needing hearing aids, my high frequency range is well above normal. Audiologist said the only way someone can have a curve like that is due to hereditary hearing loss - not exposure (exposure damages across all frequency ranges).

Got fitted for custom formed 20 db and 25 db earplugs. Wear them all the time. Cost $200, but my work insurance paid for it. They are well worth it.

Before I got my hearing tested I always wondered why I eq'd the highs down and the lows up, why children talking drive me crazy and why squeals make me irate. After the test it all makes sense.

From another post of mine in that thread:

Union Hearing Aid Centre Ltd.
Suite 710 - 123 Edward Street
Toronto, ON

They have an audiologist that is there 3 days a week or so to do tests - tests cost ~$30. I had the audiologist write a script for the attenuators and then just submitted a claim to my work insurance - viola it was paid.

I think I'm going to pick up a pair of Etymotic ER20s, as per Karim's recommendation a while ago.

pfft. Pussies. If it's too loud, you're too old.

I dunno how you guys can stand wearing em. I have to wear earplugs while I'm at work, and they block the midrange and higher frequencier really well, so everything sounds really weird, not just softer.

Quality earplugs simply lower the volume you hear, not the quality. Which is why I'm going to grab those Etymotics.

That, and I value my goddamn hearing.

1) Custom form fitted hearing protection is not uncomfortable to wear.

2) Inexpensive attenuators distort frequency response by reducing different frequencies by differing dB (like messing with the EQ on your stereo) - which is bad. High end attenuators reduce ALL frequencies by the same amount (the exact same as turning the volume down on your stereo) - which is good.
