also... have you ever been out? to a club? have you ever listened to a set?
to use a computer analogy... when you are programing, you are using tools that someone else created... and putting them together arent you? some people make their own computing language, or even their own opporating system. then others take that preexisting code set of codes... say basic... and rearranging them into a coherent program for someone to enjoy. its not like the average person sits there and looks at set of code and rules that, while in and of itself, may be somewhat of a sick turnon to someone... but instead, its more about what the code can do.
djs program their sets. thats not really an analogy.. its part of our vocabulary.
i dont really have a collection of songs that i listen to. i dont make a tracklist and listen to one random song after another. i have a collection of sets made by other djs becuase i am interested in what they can do to the same tracks that i have. the only single tracks that i have in my computer are those i purchased for the sake of spinning on cdjs. like words in a sentence, a song can have a different meaning when put in a different context. |

Liking certain tracks is one thing. Mixing them using your own creativity and to create a mood, a journey and energy is really quite a different experience. I guess it also depeneds on who you are playing to.. mixing at home, compared to in a club, is an ENTIRELY different experience ;) Either way there is nothing quite like that perfect transition. You could start a thread on why we actually choose to dj :D
Being a dj I suppose is like being an painter or artist. Every persons style is different.
Do you dj? Also what type of EDM do you listen to? (assuming you do else you wouldnt be here :p) |
If EDM means Electronic Dance Music, then I listen to all the subgenres of House, Trance, EuroDance, Techno, Hardcore, and some Breakbeat. My favorite artists/Dj's are Ferry Corsten, Paul Van Dyk, and Paul Oakenfield. I dont like Vocal Trance very much though, but I will tolerate it if it is in a different language other than English, and/or if the song has lots of energy. My favorite trance song is "Sublime" by Ferry Corsten.
So this idea of "Remixing.." will the Dj take the song, change it around before a show, and then play it? And then beatmatch another song to it, and then play it after that song?

No, I never been to a club, I would like to watch videos of Dj's playing trance/dance music, but I can never find any that arent Hip Hop.
And I am sorry if it seems ilke I dont even belong here. The whole DJing idea does interest me, just more the programming of your own music and playing. I apologise if all my questions seem retarded or anything, I just love dance music and I love programming it. And there has been no realible source to answer all of my questions. Thank you, and keep it coming! |

someitmes you can remix live.. but they can also litereally remix a whole song and sell it. meaning... remixing live in a set, you dont have a whole song becuase 1/3 of the beginning is mixed with another song, and 1/3 of the end is mixed with another song.
sounds like you should get into ableton live... do what sasha does. |

Why do you say that? I know what Ableton live is, but why do you suggest this? |

No, I said that I KNOW what Ableton live is, I have used it before. What I was asking, is WHY do you think I should use it? Im pretty sure when I type in "Why DjJade wants me to use Ableton live." I wont come up with very many results. |

| i figure if you knew what it was, you wouldnt be asking me why... it sounds exactly what you are trying to do.. live remixing in a set. i dont understand why i would need to explain myself for suggesting if youre all not content with just mixing premade songs together and wanting to do more looping and producing in a live set. |

OK, I'll make this simple. Trance DJs do the exact same thing that hip-hop DJs do. You get a track you like put it on deck one and start playing. Then you get another track you like put it on deck two, beatmatch the suckers so you can bring that track in while the other track is playing to create a nice transition between songs.
Why do we play other people's music? Well because I guarantee you if I played my own tracks in a bar, or a club, or a houseparty, etc... Everyone would leave, so I play tracks that rock the house instead of my own garbage. |

these seem relevant... i have found lots of videos on p2p networks... im sure there are plenty of your favorites that you could watch. i know that there are also a few posted here at TA but i am too lazy to find them.
dont ever think that you dont belong here... there arent stupid questions and i am sorry if i sounded cocky or soemthing becuase my last post seemed to offend you or something.
there are alot of helpful people in this community. the only thing that i can suggest is to go through the amature dj promotion section on this site and find a set wtih some songs that you recognize, and listen to those sets. hell you can even go to my website [shameless self promotion lol] and download some of my stuff but its been progressive house and progressive breaks lately... the eariler sets are trancier though.
there are alot of factors that i appreciate in djing... setting it apart from pure producing. a big skill that i respect in a dj is how well he or she communicates with an audience... response and controling is very impressive. people go to hear a dj.. they want to be taken on a journey, but they also want to hear songs they like. its very difficult to strike that balance. i remember when i saw luke chable, it took him about 3 songs to fill up a dance floor. that was amazing. |

Good Producer = have the ability to create a harmony that connects with people.
Good Dj = Knowing when to play the special tune with that harmony |

| I hadn't actually really used Ableton live for much of anything, but now I have started doing the tutorials and sequencing my own beats, its amazingly easy and user friendly. It feels so comfortable to use, and its so self-explanitory. I mean I am sure if I played my tracks in a club people would leave to, I just wanted to do this as sort of a self hobby, not to make a living. If I wanted to listen to pre-made songs, and have them crossfade each other, I would just make a trance playlist, and have Winamp crossfade it, saving me the time/work/money instead of DJing, thats why I didnt really like the idea of "remixing". But thanks everyone for your help, and Ill keep researching. |
