Urgent: Hookah Help

So I bought my first hookah today! It's a 19" single-hose.. nothing fancy.
I'm just having a bitch of a time getting the charcoals to light the tobacco well. I'm holding the charcoal in the tongs over a flame till they start sparking.. then I put them on the metal part with the holes that sits over the bowl while sucking in. What the hell is going wrong?

| I dunno man.. the first bowl I loaded lit really well and quick.. second one.. no luck. |
