The night started with an extended tour of the Highlands looking for food. We ended up at Taco Mac, or as LeeAnn likes to call it, Beer Mac, and had our fill of food and beer. (Don't get the nachos.) After which we b-lined to the Drunken Unicorn and still managed to be there early. I like to mention, by the way, Drunken Unicorn is as hard to find as a real unicorn. Thanks to the black guy in a mohawk, we parked in front of the hole in the ground.
Since the door was still closed, the three of us decided to walk across the street and buy some beer and drink in the parking lot. As we cross the dangerously wide street, Greg starts telling us about the time he saw Phil K years back in Gainesville. When he gets to the part where he smokes with Phil, Greg yells, "There he is!" And there he was to the right of us, crossing the street with us. Hey Phil! We all march into the liquor store looking for booze and Phil looking for smokes. As we wait in the world's slowest liquor line, I tell Phil the story of Peach telling Nick Warren how good Nick is but Phil K being better. Phil had a good laugh out of that and I got a great background of Phil sticking his tongue out in my phone. (I hope you got the pic Georgia!)
At this point I have to be honest; going into this party I had my doubts. I loved Y4K but his Therapy Sessions CD was sub par. Beyond that, I have not been exposed to any of his sets. So he was batting 50/50 in my eyes and if not for Phil being Dan's (SlackerBoy9) and Peach's favorite DJ, I probably would not have made the trip out on a weeknight. Clearly, I was not meant to be disappointed.
The venue was small, dark and intimate. A nice change of pace from Eleven50 I always goto. The sound was nice with bass I can feel. The drinks were cheap! Two beers and a vodka tonic was $11. So far so good. The setup for Phil was pretty ghetto. The plastic foldable table caved in the middle from the weight of two Technics, DJM-600, 2 CDJ-1000 MK2s and a Pioneer EFX-1000 effects box. They even had cinderblocks stablizing the legs. Ahh the memories of underground raves.
Michael Scott & DJ Inc did a great job opening. Chunky, groovy and at times banging. My only complaint was the volume slowly crept up as their set progressed. Towards the end, I can almost hear the speakers sweating.
Then Phil K came on and his first three tracks was not only technically inspiring but really set the mood for rest of the evening. (Third track was M.A.N.D.Y. vs Booka Shade - Body Language) He pounded that effects machine like it was going out of style but never did the effects overshadow the music. Then Habersham came on and totally lost the energy Phil had created. Not taking anything from Habersham but Phil was just leagues ahead of him in terms of DJing. I was front and center watching Phil like a hawk and some of the stuff he pulled was of turntablist precision and speed. Through out the night Phil and Habersham tag teamed and at multiple points in the evening I told Greg Habersham needs to call it a night. He played good tracks but I wanted more Phil K! I am convinced I need an effects machine. Those things are so much fun! Surprisingly, Phil didn't play much breaks. I must have heard perhaps 5 breaks the entire evening.
The place was packed, the crowds were dancing and the bathroom lines were murder. You can tell the crowd knew their music. Lots of old schoolers were present, all of which I don't know. Met some nice people who I hope to see more often at parties and perhaps posting on TA. ;) The lame Drunken Unicorn staff wouldn't let Phil play an encore - ******s. Phil wanted to play and he kept looking for a green light from the staff. I wonder whether Phil played at an afterparty...
Great to see Greg, LeeAnn, Asai, Devin, Corey, Brendon (FFEntertainment). Wow what a party... It's been a long time since I've been inspired by a DJ. Not even the mighty Zabiela did it for me. It was Phil ing K!!!
Check out LeeAnn's pics later tonight. They are grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat! |

| Scott i am glad you now know why i am always going on about Phil K. besides being in my opinion one of the best technical dj's(and even jz talks about being inspired by him) he plays sets that kind of are all over the place ,he gets classified as breaks for some reason .if you ever want to hear more of his live sets i have about 30 and a few more of his promo cd's.I am quite upset that you got to see him before me...if it had been on a friday or saturday i would have been there for sure.Ahem now if some other promoters in the southeast will step up and book him in a less ghetto venue..(last 2 times he has been at that hole and the blue room in jax).Phil and James Zabiela have played a versus set in australia which was by the reviews i read somewhere between genius and rubbish(some people were mad about them having a scratch battle with star wars samples)..i think those 2 could be the next coming of sasha and Digweed..i know it sounds ridiculous but their sounds mesh and compliment.I am surprised that habersham's sound didn't catch your attention |
