Out Of The Past - Mystery, Fred Baker ruins a classic?

Ive seen all the cries and moans of "Fred ruined a classic omfg!" etc, and ive never heard the original Union Jack - Two Full Moons and a Trout on Platipus records, so i bought the CDR from Platipus out of curiousity.
What a dissapointment :wtf:. Of 4 mixes on the CDR, Original/Caspar/Fif/Union Jack, theirs a severe lacking to all of them. They just all seem to 'light' to me, nothing chunky in them, and with no complexity. Some of the original synths/strings used back in the day sound like something i'd hear in a Psy-trance production. The amazing vocal in the original is probably what all the fuss is about. Its just simply not used to any effect in the original 4 mixes.
This is where Fred takes over i think. The breakdown (that all-important stereotypical ingredient in a modern trance production) in 'Mystery' is so emotional and haunting, Fred has used it to devastating effect, flicking back to the Original mixes, the vocal is simply wasted...
Dont get me wrong, Freds own recreation has its fault. The buildup is simple at best, with that overused techy/tribal sound (yes i know its a buzz-word :D ) similar to something SvD would produce, but man oh man, my arms would lose all feeling with the breakdown.

| you are wrong. Freds mix is getting ravaged by Caspar Pounds remix. Especially the end part of the 12 min ride when the beautiful melody kicks in. |

I'm not going to argue why the original mixes are miles better than this remake, as that will be a total waste of time. I will however give this remake the slaughtering it deserves.
This remake has the standard e Speedy J-snare Fred Baker has been beating to death as well as pathetic, massively OTT and downright tacky synths that have 0 regard for the original's subtleties, as well as two stupidly placed breakdowns with an equally stupid and overblown use of the vocals, which take away all the tension and clash completely with the initial mood. The result is appauling, overblown and utterly obvious and thus fits right into the pointless and remake-category. |

Fred ruined a classic IMHO. I first heard "Two Full Moons and a Trout" back in 1994, when the remixes where released on Rising High. I instantly took a liking on the Caspar Pound Remix, it was simply the most beautifull track I had ever heard. It made such a huge impact on me that still to this day I get shivers down my spine when I listen to it.
Baker's version doesn't do that for me. In fact, Baker's version doesn't do squat for me. It's just total crap, especially when compared to Caspar Pound's remix.
Maybee it's a "you had to be there" thing? idk.

Fred Baker raped the track. The original is dark, evil, hypnotic with a slight hint of "happiness" with those vocals. This remix turns it into a mediocre in-your-face wannabe hard track, with an endless breakdown with annoying and pointless looooooooong strings. I take the original over the remix anyday, hypnotic subtle tracks > epic over-blown anthems.
I'm not a fan of the Caspar Pound remix neither though. And you took the best part of the original mix out of your sample there. |

| Actually, your sample of the original track is a slightly different version of what I have.. it's longer, doesn't end so suddenly, there isn't that "gating" effect on the vocals and it has everywhere a bit more "punch" - maybe that's just a ripping issue. |

I had not heard any of them before reading this thread, and judging from the samples, the original mix is the best by far. Nice and hypnotic, great acid bassline.
And I can't express how much i hate that snare in the Fred Baker version! Can people stop using it already? It's that damn "tiesto-techno" thing where everybody uses big screaming synths and that huge snare and call it techno |

Fred Baker's remix is a travesty.
The fact that this is getting released on the A State Of Trance label is even more deplorable.

| Hasn't it virtually always been the custom of contemporary remakes to be utter e? It's usually expected, so I don't even bother giving them a listen. |

| lol i gather Freds remake doesnt go down to well then :D. It'd be interesting so see what other mix is on the vinyl being released on Armada soon :) |
