[quote]N.Y. radio station fined $240,000 for 'smackfests'
Mon Aug 8, 4:06 PM ET
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A New York radio station has agreed to pay $240,000 after sponsoring "smackfest" contests in which young women took turns slapping each other for a chance to win concert tickets and cash.
In a statement, New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer and State Athletic Commission Chairman Ron Scott Stevens said on Monday that WQHT, an FM station owned by Emmis Communications Corp. , had also agreed to donate $60,000 to a nonprofit group that promotes awareness of domestic violence.
"This agreement should be a wake-up call to all those in the entertainment industry who think outrageousness is a clever marketing strategy," Spitzer said in a statement.
The station and New York authorities agreed on the settlement after the state filed a petition against WQHT in New York state court.
Barry Mayo, senior vice president and general manager at Indianapolis-based Emmis, said WQHT would run anti-violence programming and was "completely committed" to making the settlement work.
"Despite the fact that the contestants voluntarily participated in what was supposed to be harmless entertainment, it was not our finest hour, and New York City deserves better," Emmis Radio President Rick Cummings said.
New York officials began an investigation of the FM radio station, which bills itself as Hot 97, earlier this year.
State officials had argued that the two dozen "Smackfest" contests the station sponsored in 2004 and early in 2005constituted a kind of unlicensed "combative sport," similar to underground boxing.
Videos of the "smackfest" contests had been featured on the station's Web site. |

| hehehe, "Smackfest" is just too funny, but it's kinda typical that something like this would fall to the clutches of political corectness :) |

| Actually that is pretty retarded...I don't think boxing or any other form of fighting competitions is anything like this smackfest...it sounds to me like some sicko's wet dream/fetish  And I definitely wouldn't want to see chicks smacking each other |

| Boxing is sanctioned by a governing body and has rules. Smackfests do not have either as it seems. SIMPLE. |

 another slippery slope thread title...
radio contests are not the same as regulated, sanctioned boxing matches.
if we're going to go down the slipperly slope path...let's say these contests are allowed...well...what stops a radio station from putting two guys in a ring and letting them pound on each other? |

Im pretty sure Hot 97 was the NYC station that played the Tsumami song...which should have gotten their licenced ripped off the air. TOTALLY brutal and unhumanitary.
That station needs to be burned down. lol.

common jayx, you can't possibly compare boxing to smackfest.
smackfest is a stupid contest created only for its shock value of women demoralizing themselves in something as shameful as a catfight you'd see on richmond street on a saturday nite. at least boxing is sanctioned event with civil rules. this is just trailertrash to the extreme. what civilized person is going to take continuous shots to the head for a measly $50 bucks. i'm happy i'm not at that point of desperation. |

Yes, they did create the Tsunami song. They didn't have their license taken away but the hosts were taken off air for a couple of days I think. Hardly a slap on the wrist. |

| Sorry but boxing regulated or not is still two men beating each other senseless. Im willing to bet that if "smackfest" were guys smacking each other nothing would have come of this. Hey these girls were not forced to participate. They volunteered. So let them do it if they want. If it were my station i would not have paid the fine or i would have found an organization that helps men in abused relationships just to prove a point. |
