arm an effect channel (lower-right corner of mixer) so the disk appears orange; then select the "in" source. now insert an audio clip from the step sequencer window by right clicking>insert channel>audio clip. link the newly created channel to the armed mixer number. press f5 to bring up the playlist. in playlist go change the focus to audio clips. hit the record icon at the top (near play/stop button) so that it turns orange. go back to the playlist and press play. it should start to record.
also make sure you set up the necessary stuff in the taskbar's speaker icon.
that should do the trick. |

| it records and shows the keys i pressed but no sound plays back, any ideas? |

| you're trying to get audio to record right? not a midi controller of some sort? |
