You're completely right.
What we call "trance" here on this site, 99% of people around the world call "techno", or "dance". Mostly "techno".
If you ask a person on the street about "trance," they'll have no idea that you can even DANCE TO IT!! They'll think it's some slow music that puts you in a trance. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Remember that 99% of the world doesn't think this way.
Most normal people, when they hear Delerium - Silence or Alice Deejay or Ian van Dahl or Armin - Communication, stuff with vocals and melodies and synths, will call that "techno".

Eugene, ure so right ... it's exactly that in Vienna too...
But these ppl call every electronic music "techno"! And why? Because they don't know any styles! As I didn't know the styles, only that I like everything electronic I also said "I listen to techno" ... and I still sometimes use this definition ... like u. |

Honestly i could not care less what ppl think of trance. I like the underground nature of trance.......cause going too commercial has killed many genres. Ppl can honestly think trance sucks..... or whatever.......i like trance and i don't give a who hates it.
Coz i know it is addictive as hell anyways, ppl start to like it somewhat.....just leads to further tranceaddiction which is a good thing. |

Well my mate used to be into trance, around 1999, big suprise, and now garage is popular in this country (blah) he is switching to that, i hate people who follow fashionable music, even if trance died out 2moro, and it was driven under ground, and every hated people who liked it, i would still listen to it. It is the only music that gives me the feeling in side. You know what i mean.
So you can always spot these people. Oh god |

In the UK it's so annoying, it's the complete opposite - you say you like Trance and they automatically think you like the cheesy dance crap in the charts, nothing pees me off more than that - even worse is when a track crosses over and everyone goes mad over it and most of us have probably herd it up to 6 months earlier! :whip: :whip: :whip:
Another thing that gets me is the way that every track HAS to have a genre. How cares what style it is - if you like it listen to it, if you don't, don't. Anyway it's all just variations of house in the end! :p |

Most ppl in the UK have heard of trance music. However, their idea of trance is very different to mine...
You're absoluteley right spin doctor. I totally hear ya! It really fu*ks me off when the people I know say to me "I've heard this new TRANCE tune and it's really good.... have you heard it?"... When what they actually mean is that they've heard some really crap cheesy chart "trance" tune (which us ppl that are into trance would call 'dance' (or crap!)) and they want to know whether or not I like it.
I'm sick of your average Joe comparing my 1st love in music genres to dance music... in effect, what they are doing is comapring Van Dyk and Tiesto to the likes of Whigfield and Maxx. Makes me wanna smack 'em square in the face...:whip:
Ppl need to sort their heads out and actually learn what trance is... then at least when someone I know asks me if I like a certain trance tune, they'll actually be talking about a genre I like instead of some crap I hate!
Anyway... to get to the end of a rather long post and answer the original question, ppl think they know what trance is but infact they don't...they refer to it as dance/trance! |

eugene you are absolutely right, I do the same thing as you sometimes. When I'm talking to people whom I think don't know anything about electronika, I just say I listen to techno, cuz that's what they group all music with a driving beat and without vocals as. A lot of times its been like this:
friend: what kinda music do you listen to?
me: trance
me: like techno
friend: oh i see
sucks but just gotta deal with it. its still too underground here in canada for everyone to know the distinction |

No offence Jayci but I think you have it better than us UK lot.
It's hard to decide. Would it be better for people to stare at you blankly when you say you like trance or for them to just think you like the cheesy money grabbing chart crap.
I know I’d prefer to be in your boat mate! |

| When I talk to my cousins about dance music and mention the word 'Trance' they immediately complain about the British habit of wanting to classify every different style, they don't get all these genres and sub-genres that we in the U.K. bang on about. Basically 'Techno' is used to refer to non-House European dance music, that's just the way it is, you just have to give them an example of the kind of tracks that sum up the Trance sound for you. |

so. i could go on about this forever. poeple here dont listen to trance or even hear about it at ALL. i know all you US people can feel me. when i say i listen to trance theyre all like "oh you mean that stuff that is always the same all the time." i want to hit those people. whatever, their loss. there are a few hardcore listeners and thats good cuz thats all there is. people who like it a lot.

It is soooooo true about the "techno" word being used to describe trance (or anything that's not Brittany Spears, etc.). Here in the US, the average music listener is not very sophisticated in this regard.
I'd rather stay out of the mainstream anyway. As far as who can define trance, those who know, know. Those who don't, well they can just continue listening to Eiffel 65 and their other "techno" songs. |

AS for what eugene said about techno...
count me in on the group of nerds!
I hate it when people call everything with electronic sounds in it "techno". If people ask what u like, try to explain to them what trance is, not say "techno".
Anyways, what the hell do you call that genre that carl cox, dave clarke etc spin? I'd rather be a "nerd" than someone who can't tell difference between genres.
Luckily, in Holland, people know pretty good what trance is. Actually if you like techno they are likely to be like "is that like trance?" :D |
