Mom's Protest at Bush Ranch Riles Gun-Toting Neighbor
By ANGELA K. BROWN, AP
CRAWFORD, Texas (Aug. 15) - A man fired a shotgun into the air as about 60 anti-war protesters held a religious service on the road to President Bush's ranch.
Sheriff's deputies and Secret Service agents in the area of the demonstration site Sunday rushed to the home of Larry Mattlage after the shots were fired but did not arrest him.
"I ain't threatening nobody, and I ain't pointing a gun at nobody," Mattlage said. "This is Texas."
Cindy Sheehan of Vacaville, Calif., began a protest Aug. 6 on the road that leads to Bush's ranch in memory of her 24-year-old son Casey, who was killed in Iraq last year. Dozens of others have since joined her.
Sheehan said Sunday she will continue to demonstrate for three more weeks.
Mattlage said he was sympathetic toward the demonstrators at first, but they have blocked roads in the area and caused traffic problems.
He said he fired his gun in preparation for dove-hunting season but when asked if he had another motive, he said, "Figure it out for yourself."
Quotes From Bush's Neighbor
LM Otero, AP
"I'm just ready for dove season."
"When they first came out here, I was sympathetic to their cause. Right? They as American citizens have a right to march, to protest. But it's like company. If you had your brother-in-law in your house for five days, wouldn't it start stinking after a while?"
"They moved one port-a-potty. Now we got two port-a-pots. And now we got three, and if this keeps up, they'll be all the way at the end of the road."

Sheehan, 48, said she was not concerned with her own safety but has told others to be aware that "this could get physical, even though we are peaceful."
"I think we knew of the risks when we came down here," she said. "I'm surprised we haven't had more of that since we're in Bush country."
Sheehan says she won't leave her makeshift campsite until Bush meets with her and other grieving families or until his monthlong ranch visit ends. She met with two top White House officials on the first day of her demonstration.
Bush has said he sympathizes with Sheehan but has not said if he will meet with her.
Sherry Bohlen of Scottsdale, Ariz., drove with two friends to Crawford last week but did not leave Sunday as planned.
"This is history in the making, and it's hard to walk away from that," said Bohlen, whose son, Thor, has been in Iraq for a month.
im so sick of hearin about this lady who wants to talk to the president for goodness sakes she should already know the answer to the question shes is gonna ask Bush.... her son died in iraq cause he chose to join the army and swore to protect his country at all costs even his life... its not like he was forced to join the army.. im american 18+ and i chose to not join the army/ navy beacause of the risks like losing your life. her son chose to be there and died for his country which makes him a hero. |

yeah this woman needs to stop being a bitch. talking to bush won't end the war, bring her son back, or bring any other mother's kids back. and no one forced her son to join the army...so i agree 100%
ps

Hehe, Thor is a common name in Norway :P
Anyways, it's not like her son got drafted (like we are in this country), she should stop being a braindead bitch. |

| I think it's great what she's doing and I'm glad she has the courage to do it. Bush will probably never meet her, but that just goes to show how much of an he is. Nobody should have to die so our country can go and attempt to protect its future oil interests. |

By Bitch do you mean a woman who dares to question authority? If so then yeah I guess she is a "bitch". This woman is doing what many people in this country should be doing and that is being pissed off about being lied to. What have you done lately to stop the war? Oh thats right NOTHING cause you are just as complacent as everyone else. This woman is at the very least bringing attention to this issue.

no by bitch i mean a woman that is going to president of the united states to talk to him about a war that is already in progress because her son died. he's a casualty of war, it happens, people die. what have i done to stop the war? nothing...why should i? i'm not a politician nor am i in the army. was this war the best decision? i don't know...i don't watch the news, didn't follow any of the arguments for either side, so i'm in no place to comment. i just feel she's wasting her time for no reason. so yes...she is a bitch.
it reminds me of something i heard on the radio. this woman called in to a show and said "I didn't support capital punishment until my brother was murdered, now i hope his killer gets the death penalty". always bothered me... |

| According to Bill O'reily President Bush has already met with the mother and that the left wing media didn't want to report that. |

Yes he did meet with her and a group of other mothers once before already some time ago but not recently and shockingly I did not read that from some right wing media source. |

Yes, but it was very impersonal - "Responding to Sheehan's request for a meeting, the White House trumpeted the fact that Bush has already met with her once, along with about 900 other family members of 272 soldiers killed in Iraq or Afghanistan." (From a Washington Post article) |

| You people are ignorant ( sorry to sound Harsh ).. what she's doing is getting National attention as well international, in times where the Bush's ratings are low and when the sentiment against the war has grown. This is an eye opener to the whole administration, that they have to do something about pretty fast before the approval tours Bush keeps slipping, and this woman has and is hurting a lot tours the current administration.. as you guys can see. When a president goes out and talks about 1 individual in national news... its because its working, a bad sign inside the administration.. weakness. |
