i think the online portion is a money grab. newspapers get a good revenu from advertisements on their websites, especially if its the major ones that are all bundled up on canada.com. the revenue newspapers get from ads in their hardcopies is insane. a full page goes from $1500 to $4000 per day. the stories newspapers get are not localized anymore. they buy one story and run it in all of their affiliates, they are in fact probably saving money with globalization and internet.
it pissed me off when they introduced the pay subscription to online content. i was away from home for months and that was one of the few ways to stay current on what was happening home.
i think it sucks, i motion to ban this monstrous practice :p |

everyone wants something for nothing these days...it costs them money to maintain their online presence and if anyone thinks that online ads pay for *all* of those costs, I'd suggest that your overestimating how "lucrative" the online advertising business really is, lol.
I'm curious...someone ask Swamper if the ads here fully subsidize tranceaddict's bandwidth...nevermind that staff resources aren't required to continuously update content multiple times per day as they would be for an online news source! |

I have 3 online subscriptions
Hamilton Spec
Record (KW)
CTV New Net Live Stream
Id much rather read them online than the actual hardcopy.
Its not that bad jay.
Remember we are in the information revolution.
This is part our economy. Im sure with the extra revenue they will be generating, they will be able to provide us with better services. |

The other biggest advantages of online papers?
You can check a story on multiple sites. If you think a story is full of , you can just open up another window and brows another 'source'. You cannot do that with a paper, unless you pay for a few subscriptions.
One huge thing you have overlooked Jay, in terms of pricing and covering costs, is that online sites are updated continually. Papers are set, once a day. Huge difference in terms of getting information when you want it.
News once a day v.s. news all day. |

And now they expect me to pay $15 a month for that? I have a hard time believing that online papers take away from hardcopy sales. Its just a cash grab.
Thanks anyways. |
Those sites don't run on free hardware and free software, and aren't supported by volunteer employees, who receive free vendor training, and free vendor support. |
